Snap , Crackle and POP!

KWVA fans may well be familiar with Craig Leve's excellent show on Fridays 10-noon. I will be covering his show as he explains here in his weekly update :

"Hi Northwest Pop fans (and beyond),Gonna have to fill the bowl with an extra helping of Snap, Crackle, POP!as I will be away for much of November. There will be no Snap, Crackle,POP! next week; and a couple "When the Hangover Strikes" editions later in the month on Nov. 12 and Nov. 26 when the Rev. Marc Time graciously fills in. Marc can usually be heard on Sunday mornings in his usual 8am-10am time slot for "The Sunday Morning Hangover"."

Anyways I will most likely cover Grrl pop in one show and maybe my massive 45rpm collection in the other. Always available on the net at www.kwvaradio.org

John Peel from

John Peel R.I.P.

I woke up today and checked out one of my fave blogs, Kingblind, only to learn that one of the best radio announcers of all time has died, John Peel was kind enough to feature my band Bo on a couple of his broadcasts, generating fan mail for us from England, Poland and Greece.
From Kingblind:

Veteran DJ John Peel, 65, has died. He suffered a heart attack shortly after being taken ill during a working holiday in the city of Cuzco, Peru, with his wife Sheila. John Peel was a DJ on BBC Radio 1 since it was founded. His evening radio show occupied a unique position in British popular music, popularising such diverse acts as Jimi Hendrix, Marc Bolan and the Sex Pistols. "He passed away. We don't have any details. We received a phone call at 4am from his brother to inform us," said Jonathan Clare, a British embassy official in Lima. The BBC in London said Peel was on a working holiday in Cuzco with his wife, Sheila. Radio 1 Controller Andy Parfitt said "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1. John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable. "Hopeful bands all over the world sent their demo tapes to John knowing that he really cared. His commitment and passion for new music only grew stronger over the years. In fact, when I last saw him he was engaged in a lively debate with his fellow DJs over the state of new music today. He will be hugely missed. " The BBC's director of radio and music, Jenny Abramsky, said: "John Peel was a unique broadcaster whose influence on Radio 1 could be felt from its very first days. "He nurtured musicians and listeners alike introducing them to new sounds. His open minded approach to music was mirrored by his equally generous approach to his audience when he went to Radio 4 to present Home Truths. He had a remarkable rapport with all his listeners. Everyone at BBC Radio is devasted by the news. John is simply irreplaceable. Our hearts go out to Sheila and his children." Peel, born John Ravenscroft in 1939, was one of Britain's original pirate radio disc jockeys in the 1960s, broadcasting from ships anchored just outside British waters that won huge followings. Peel was his assumed "pirate" name. In the late 1970s he championed punk rock to the consternation of many of his radio contemporaries who were still playing rock supergroups - and were convinced the new music fad would never had any real impact. Peel was awarded an OBE for his services to British music.

Letter to Eugene Weekly

SHAWN'S MY MAN
Regarding the "Corporate Whores" letter (9/23), I, for one, truly will be asking myself why I wasn't as cool as Shawn Mediaclast upon my corporate judgment day. I have not met another person so supportive of truly indie ventures as Mr. Mediaclast.
"Why did I write metaphor laden letters to the editor rather than venturing downtown for some real conversation? Why did I even care enough to make hipster jokes and name drop Pabst? Oh damn, I'm bleeding on my khakis." Thus will be the dying thoughts of Kris Bluth.
I know no other store in this town that caters to people like me. People seeking new vinyl, needing the seventh bottle of Atomic Pink hair dye of the month, needing someone who's intellectual but not a pompous asshole to talk with. Hell, what if I just want to go somewhere to talk about robots or art or Devo? Shawn's my main man.
Yeah. This is my response. I am one of those purple haired alternababes, I would also probably swill Pabst like none other if I was of legal age, but hell, at least I know where the good people are at.
Ahhhh Kris, you clever son of a gun. You got us hipsters again! Caught in the act wearing Converse and shopping at the best indie record store in town. Does it really matter?

Wacky Local Story of the Week

Flat-screen TV emits international distress signal
Search and rescue operation leads to apartment
Monday, October 18, 2004
EUGENE, Oregon (Reuters) -- TV hardly gets much better than this.
An Oregon man discovered earlier this month that his year-old Toshiba Corporation flat-screen TV was emitting an international distress signal picked up by a satellite, leading a search and rescue operation to his apartment in Corvallis, Oregon, 70 miles south of Portland.
The signal from Chris van Rossmann's TV was routed by satellite to the Air Force Rescue Center at Langley Air Base in Virginia.
On October 2, the 20 year-old college student was visited at his apartment in the small university town by a contingent of local police, civil air patrol and search and rescue personnel.
"They'd never seen signal come that strong from a home appliance," said van Rossmann. "They were quite surprised. I think we all were."
Authorities had expected to find a boat or small plane with a malfunctioning transponder, the usual culprit in such incidents, emitting the 121.5 MHz frequency of the distress signal used internationally.
Van Rossmann said he was told to keep his TV off to avoid paying a $10,000 fine for "willingly broadcasting a false distress signal."
Toshiba contacted Rossmann and offered to provide him with a replacement set for free, he said.

A Kid From Widney High Posted by Hello

The Kids of Widney High

I am still fascinated by the music of these "developmentally disabled" kids (who we used to call Retards)--thanks to the Largehearted Boy Blog for pointing me to the Widney High website where you can download some of their rockin songs that don't sound of of place on any college radio format:

http://www.kidsofwidneyhigh.com/music.html

"This remarkable recording results from a songwriting class at Widney High, where Michael Monagan was teaching severely handicapped students. The students poured their efforts into the writing and performing of the songs, and for this recording they were accompanied by studio musicians. As a result of the project many of the students' behavior problems decreased and they experienced a tremendous boost of self-esteem and a feeling of accomplishment"

The Antiman Posted by Hello

My TV Appearances on "Tales From the Antiman"

Tonite I go to Eugene to tape my next week's appearance on "Tales From the Antiman", a local TV show produced for CTV. Actually you can only get it if you have cable. It's Channel 29 and if you go here

http://antimantv.com/

you can get the schedule.
I think its the best local cable access show in the Eugene area, kind of like the John Stewart show. It is NOT PC and it's pretty funny at times. I have appeared in the past as a perverted priest and a pop culture expert from Rolling Stone.
Who knows what they have in mind for me tonite.

The Debates

I can't understand it. I have tried to be fair and have given W a lot of slack over the last 4 years--and after watching the 2 debates I don't know how ANYBODY can say that they were tied. I thought Kerry kicked Bush's ass in both debates, and last night Bush looked and sounded pissed off and squeaky for at least the first half.
Ireally didn't think much of Kerry until I saw the debates and now I have to agree from the lady caller who has friends in Europe. She said most Europeans think W is an idiot (proof-last night George mentioned sites on the internets) and that a fresh face would bring our allies closer.
To paraphrase Reagan-" Are we better of now than we were 4 years ago?"

Shocking News from Shock Jock

I AM shocked! Now I have to PAY $$$ to listen to Howard!
Bummer--

From USA Today-
Howard Stern to broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio
NEW YORK — Radio shock jock Howard Stern, one of the most popular U.S. entertainment personalities, said Wednesday that he is leaving Infinity Broadcasting and will take his show to subscription-based Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI) beginning in January 2006.
Sirius stocked jumped on the news.
The five-year, multimillion dollar deal with Sirius will allow his show to be heard in every market in the country, the company says. Stern's radio show corners the market among males 18-49 years of age and ranks No. 1 in many of the 46 major markets where his show is broadcast now.
But earlier this year, Clear Channel Communications, the nation's largest chain of radio stations, dropped Stern from its stations in six markets, including San Diego and Pittsburgh, after federal regulators complained about his raunchy humor.
Stern's show often features sexually explicit remarks and off-color humor. In June, Stern announced his show would go on the air in nine new markets owned by Infinity, including four where Clear Channel stations dropped it.
Like cable television, satellite radio does not have to comply with federal indecency standards because it is only available to paid subscribers.
By luring Stern, Sirius gives itself a boost in its rivalry with its larger competitor XM Satellite Radio Holdings (XMSR) but also gives a shot in the arm to satellite radio overall, a business that is built on attracting subscribers to dozens of radio channels that are broadcast digitally.
Sirius CEO Joseph Clayton called the signing "without a doubt, the most exciting and transformational event in the history of radio."
Opie and Anthony, another popular and controversial radio voice, premiered this week on rival XM.
Sirius said Wednesday that production costs for the Stern show, including payroll, construction of a studio and development of additional programming, would cost it about $100 million a year.
The company says it can cover those costs if Stern generates 1 million new subscribers.
