Don't Forget To Say "Rabbit Rabbit"!

Rabbit rabbit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
"Rabbit rabbit" is a common superstition, held particularly among children. The most common modern version states that a person should say "rabbit, rabbit" upon waking on the first day of each new month, and on doing so will receive good luck for the remainder of that month.
Origins and history
The exact origin of the superstition is unknown, though it has appeared in print at least as early as 1920 in England, where is is most commonly said to have originated, though some reports place its origins even earlier, into the 1800s. Today it has spread to most of the English-speaking countries of the world, although like all folklore, determining its exact area of distribution is difficult. The superstition is related to the broader belief in the rabbit or hare being a "lucky" animal, as exhibited in the practice of carrying a rabbit's foot for luck.
Variations
As with most folklore, which is traditionally spread by word of mouth, there are numerous variant versions of the "rabbit, rabbit" superstition, in some cases specific to a certain time period or region. There are hundreds of variants, some of the most common of which include...
* The inverse: instead of believing that saying it will bring good luck, believing that not saying it will bring bad luck.
* Instead of saying "rabbit, rabbit", saying just "rabbit", or "rabbits". Some also extend it to three rabbits: "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit."
* Using the night of the new moon instead of the first night of the month.
* Saying "black rabbits" the night before, and "white rabbits" on the morning in question.
* Believing that the effect is stronger on one's month of birth.
* Referring to the first day of each month as "Rabbit Day".
* Various ways to counteract forgetting to say it, most commonly saying it backwards ("tibbar, tibbar") before falling asleep.
* A different but related practice of saying "Happy White Rabbit's Day" to someone in order to bring good luck.

Canadians Say “No UFO Wars in Outer Space”

(PRWEB) - OTTAWA, CANADA (PRWEB) November 24, 2005 -- A former Canadian Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister under Pierre Trudeau has joined forces with three Non-governmental organizations to ask the Parliament of Canada to hold public hearings on Exopolitics -- relations with “ETs.” By “ETs,” Mr. Hellyer and these organizations mean ethical, advanced extraterrestrial civilizations that may now be visiting Earth.
On September 25, 2005, in a startling speech at the University of Toronto that caught the attention of mainstream newspapers and magazines, Paul Hellyer, Canada’s Defence Minister from 1963-67 under Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prime Minister Lester Pearson, publicly stated: "UFOs, are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head."
Mr. Hellyer went on to say, "I'm so concerned about what the consequences might be of starting an intergalactic war, that I just think I had to say something."
Hellyer revealed, "The secrecy involved in all matters pertaining to the Roswell incident was unparalled. The classification was, from the outset, above top secret, so the vast majority of U.S. officials and politicians, let alone a mere allied minister of defence, were never in-the-loop."
Hellyer warned, "The United States military are preparing weapons which could be used against the aliens, and they could get us into an intergalactic war without us ever having any warning. He stated, "The Bush administration has finally agreed to let the military build a forward base on the moon, which will put them in a better position to keep track of the goings and comings of the visitors from space, and to shoot at them, if they so decide."
Canada has a long history of opposing the basing of weapons in Outer Space. On September 22, 2004 Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin declared to the U.N. General Assembly,” "Space is our final frontier. It has always captured our imagination. What a tragedy it would be if space became one big weapons arsenal and the scene of a new arms race.”

My Past Fudgepacker Life

Here is a history of my stint as drummer for the Pope’s bands in the 80’s

from the Happy Clams site----http://california.com/~rawbird/gailandfudge.html

After writing a song called"Night of the Living Elvis" and having it played on KALX 90.7 FM in Berkeley, Xeno Lactomase and Paul Pot joined in with the folks listed below to form Gail and the Fudgepackers. They played two gigs in 1986 and broke up in a huff. After the breakup the band was asked by Shredder Records if a recording of this song could be included on the first (and now unavailable) Shredder Records release. Everybody shrugged their shoulders and said ok. If the band had been more into it, maybe they might have insisted on the superior "Living in the Sewer" or even "Night of the Living Elvis". Oh well. Some things just get lost.

Gail Warnng : Bass
Pope Paul Pot : Vocals
Gary Nervo : Farfisa
Xeno : Guitar
Marc Time : Drums

Marc's first band was the Jars. The Jars were formed in 1978 out of the remnants of San Francisco’s SST. SST included Ted Falconi later of Flipper on guitar. After SST broke up in 78 Irene Dogmatic formed the Beauty Killers with Matt Markham from SST, Jim Goodwin (later with Sparks, John Cale and the Call) Marc Time on Drums and Mik McDow on guitar and Armin Hammer on Bass. After a gig or 2 in SF the Beauty Killers broke up. In 1978 Marc Mik and Armin formed the Jars with JD Buhl , and Gary Nervo(ex Pagans Road Manager) . The Jars helped spearhead the Berkeley Punk/New Wave scene by playing at the International CafĂ©, Aitos Club, the Keystone,Berleley High and various pizza parlors and frat parties. By 1979 the Jars were playing all over the Bay Area at the Mabuhay Gardens, the Deaf Club, the Temple and the old Waldorf opening up for Roky Erickson, the Angry Samoans, Horslips, the Dickies, the Flamin Groovies, the Psycotic Pineapple, the Dead Kennedys, the Suspects, the Mutants ,and MX 80 to name but a few. It was in 1979 that J.D.Buhl left the band. An EP was recorded for the young Subterranean label, “Start Rite Now”, “Psycho”, and “Electric 3rd Rail”. In 1980 a second 45 “Time of the Assassins/Jar Wars” was recorded and released on a Telegraph Avenue record store label called Universal records. Both songs received much airay on starions such as KALX and rose to the top of the Mabuhay Gardens Rotten Record chart. Mike Montalto (ex Special Guests) joined on guitar. Sessions at Fantasy records for the first LP "Teenage Rebellion" continued into 1981 but band members soon parted to pursue separate musical projects. Marc and Nervo formed the Art Faggots with Ray Farrell (ex Sonic Youth Road Manager) and Nervos wife Marge on Drums.
Later came Bo with Marc and Nervo, Marc Monosonic (ex Fried Abortions Manager) and Snoopy (Snoopy and Red Baronesses) on Guitar. This band opened for Isocracy, Rancid, the Offspring Crimpshrine, Green Day and others at the Gilman St club in Berkeley in the late 80s.

The Prisoner Returns

Sky One is in talks to bring back the adventure series, which starred Patrick McGoohan as Prisoner Number 6.
The series, which made its debut 1967, is today credited by its fans as being ahead of its time.
Featuring McGoohan as a former secret agent trapped in an isolated seaside village, it was shown in more than 60 countries.
The new version will not be placed in the original setting, the north Wales village of Portmeirion, or have the arty, "pop" feel of the original, according to the magazine Broadcast.
Damien Timmer, who has been lined up to executive produce the show, told the television and radio industry magazine that the new series "takes liberties with the original".
He said: "Although it will be a radical reinvention, it will still be a heightened show with themes such as paranoia, conspiracy and identity crisis."
The original show, which ran on ITV for 17 episodes, has been the subject of university courses.
American-born McGoohan, who was also its co-creator, denied that it contained any hidden meanings.
The new version will be remade by Granada and is currently being written by Bill Gallagher, the writer of Conviction.
Sky One is in talks about an initial eight-part series next year.
European and US networks could also be involved in a co-production deal.

Why You Should Buy Citgo Gas

Joseph P. Kennedy II of Citizens Energy Corp. and other officials deliver oil Tuesday to Quincy residents

QUINCY, Massachusetts (AP) -- Thousands of low-income Massachusetts residents will receive discounted home heating oil this winter under an agreement signed Tuesday with Venezuela, whose government is a political adversary of the Bush administration.
Citgo Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, will supply oil at 40 percent below market prices. It will be distributed by two nonprofit organizations, Citizens Energy Corp. and the Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance.
The agreement gives President Hugo Chavez's government standing as a provider of heating assistance to poor U.S. residents at a time when U.S. oil companies have been reluctant to do so and Congress has failed to expand aid in response to rising oil prices.
U.S. Rep. William Delahunt of Massachusetts, a Democrat, met with Chavez in August and helped broker the deal. He said his constituents' needs for heating assistance trump any political points the Chavez administration can score.
"This is a humanitarian gesture," Delahunt said, speaking after a news conference with Venezuelan officials and others outside the home of a constituent in Quincy who will receive heating aid.
Citgo is the Houston, Texas-based subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company and has about 13,500 independently owned U.S. gas stations.
U.S. officials accuse Chavez of endangering Venezuelan democracy by assuming ever greater powers.
During a short-lived 2002 coup against Chavez, the U.S. government promptly recognized the new leaders, who were soon driven out amid a popular uprising.

Gary Glitter-Child Molester

Nov 19, 2005 — HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam police have arrested British rocker Gary Glitter on a child molestation charge, a state-run newspaper reported on Sunday.
The Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted immigration police at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat airport as saying Glitter — whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd — was arrested while trying to board a plane to Bangkok on Saturday morning.
Immigration police at the airport declined to comment.
The state-run youth newspaper said police escorted Glitter back to the southern resort town of Vung Tau where, according to state-run Vietnamese media, he had taken home several girls aged 15 or under.
On Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung said police wanted to question the 61-year-old rocker about the allegations, which first surfaced in the British tabloid press.
"If we have evidence of a child sexual violation, very strict legal measures would be applied," Dung said.
On Friday police launched a formal investigation against Glitter.
The age of consent in Vietnam is 16 and sex with minors is punishable by up to 12 years in jail.
Glitter was sentenced to four months in jail in Britain in 1999 after being found guilty of storing more than 4,000 images of child pornography on the hard drive of his computer.
After his release, he left Britain for Cuba and then later turned up in Phnom Penh.
Child rights activists hounded him out of Cambodia twice and have had his name put on an entry blacklist, although Glitter filed lawsuits last year fighting the deportation orders.
Vietnamese newspapers have reported Glitter had been in Vietnam for about a year.

Link Wray R.I.P.

PCL LinkDump reports:
It's a sad, sad, sad, day here at the PCL Headquarters (as well as over at the HTMPL Office). Link Wray has passed away.
The King.
Most people refer to Elvis as the King - and they are not wrong. He was the King.
But Link Wray was the The KING OF ROCK. And he most certainly was The KING OF THE ROCK GUITAR. (Now, if you Google that sentence - "The KING OF THE ROCK GUITAR" - you will end up with this, and that is just ridiculous.)

"He is the King; if it hadn't been for Rumble, I would have never picked up a guitar." -- Pete Townsend

Dog Honored By Cats

300 Cats To Attend Dog's Memorial Service
Ginny Saved Hundreds Of Cats

It could be a first: a dog's memorial service attended by 300 cats.
That's what will happen Nov. 19 at the Westchester Cat Show in White Plains when a schnauzer-Siberian husky mix named Ginny is eulogized.
Ginny's not just any dog, though. She's an honorary cat.
Ginny was named Cat of the Year in 1998 for her uncanny skill and bravery in finding and rescuing endangered tabbies.
Ginny died in August at age 17, after a long career as a one-dog rescue party for cats on Long Island's South Shore. The club says she saved hundreds of cats who were abandoned, injured or in harm's way.
One time, she threw herself against a vertical pipe at a construction site to topple it and reveal kittens trapped inside.
Her owner, Philip Gonzalez, said the adopted shelter dog wasn't trained to do that -- she was "just magical in a way." He wrote two books about Ginny.
“I didn’t train her,” he said. “Ginny was just magical in a way. I adopted her from a shelter, and they said she’s never been with cats before. But she just had this knack of knowing when a cat was in trouble.”
As he used to do with Ginny, Gonzalez still goes out every night to feed stray cats in the area. The cats seem to miss Ginny too, he said.
“They want nothing to do with my other dogs,” he said. “They used to come up to Ginny and rub against her, even if I was putting food out.”

Jimmy Carter on the Decision to Invade Iraq

Did anyone see Larry King the other night when Carter, our FORMER PRESIDENT said that the decision to invade Iraq was made BEFORE Bush got elected? I'm surprised no one mentioned this:
Encore Presentation: Interview with Former President Jimmy Carter
Aired November 13, 2005 - 21:00 ET

CARTER: "Well, I think the decision to go into Iraq as a war was made before Bush was elected President George W. Bush, and I think that it was before 9/11 because some of the top officials in his government now decided after the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait under George Bush, Sr. that he should have gone all the way to Baghdad and have removed Saddam Hussein from power. So that decision was made by some of them long before George Bush even was elected."

Do you know what the implications are? Carter is saying that it really doesn't matter WHO is elected, that a military complex controls foreign policy. Whew.

Great Post over at Entroporium:

From Ben, posted over there at Entroporium:
http://www.entroporium.com/
"OK, this has to be one of my strangest guess-what-I-saw-on-the-internets-today experiences ever. Aside from the heavy heavy flashback of seeing the Universal Records folks(are they in front of the old store at Dwight, or was it even called Universal when it was down there?), I swear you look exactly like me at that time and place. Like if you showed me that picture I would say it was me and I didn't remember it being taken. Are you me? Is that why we've never been photographed together?
Anyway, it's great to hear about MT's current gig. When I was in seventh grade, like in 1978, I used to think he was such a rock star. I used to see him waiting for the 7 at Center and Shattuck on his way up to Rather Ripped and just think it was so cool; or see him at like No Sisters or Readymades or Eye Protection shows and be like wow! Those Rather Ripped/Universal people seemed uberhip to me. After that, I worked for a while with Nervo and Mike and Ray Ferrell at Down Home, so they lost a little of their lustre, but not so much."-Ben
Ben- Do I know you? Great comment, makes me feel more important than I am. Universal was between Durant and Bancroft on Telegraph almost next to the Rasputins used store. You may be thinking of Ron's first store run by Nervo at Dwight and Telegraph called The Music Faucet.
I first worked at the Wherehouse in Oakland in 76, Rasputins 77-78, Rather Ripped 78-79, and Universal 79-81.The stories I could tell !

Did we use Chemical Weapons on Civilians in Iraq?

US fired phosphorus in Iraq, TV reports
By Reuters | November 9, 2005
ROME -- Italian television aired a documentary yesterday alleging that the United States had used white phosphorus shells ''in a massive and indiscriminate way" against civilians in the November 2004 offensive in the Iraqi town of Fallujah.
The US military has denied that it used white phosphorus against civilians. It confirmed, however, that US forces had dropped MK 77 firebombs, which a documentary on Italian state-run broadcaster RAI compared to napalm, against military targets in Iraq in March and April 2003.
The documentary showed images of bodies recovered after a November 2004 offensive by US troops on Fallujah, which it said proved the use of white phosphorus against men, women, and children who were burned to the bone.
An incendiary device, white phosphorus is also used to light up combat areas.
The use of incendiary weapons against civilians has been banned by the Geneva Convention since 1980. The United States did not sign the relevant protocol to the convention, a UN official in New York said.
''I do know that white phosphorus was used," said Jeff Englehart in the RAI documentary, which identified him as a former soldier in the US 1st Infantry Division who had taken part in the Falluja offensive. ''White phosphorus kills indiscriminately."
The US Marines in Baghdad described white phosphorus as a ''conventional munition" used primarily for smoke screens and target marking. It denied using it against civilians.
''Suggestions that US forces targeted civilians with these weapons are simply wrong," US Marine Major Tim Keefe said in an e-mail message. ''Had the producers of the documentary bothered to ask us for comment, we would have certainly told them that the premise of the program was erroneous."
He said US forces do not use chemical weapons in Iraq.

Subject: Guts or balls

We've all heard about people having guts or balls. But do you really know the difference between them? In an effort to keep you informed, the definition for each is listed below ...

GUTS: Arriving home late after a night out with the guys, being assaulted by your wife with a broom, and having the guts to ask, "Are you still cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?"

BALLS: Coming home late after a night out with the guys, smelling of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the ass and having the balls to say, "You're next."

I hope this clears up any confusion on the subject.

Another Bush/Rove Crony Under Investigation

Remember this next time you listen to NPR or watch PBS:

Spending Inquiry for Top Official on Broadcasting
By STEPHEN LABATON NY Times
Published: November 5, 2005

WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 - Kenneth Y. Tomlinson, the head of the federal agency that oversees most government broadcasts to foreign countries, including the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe, is the subject of an inquiry into accusations of misuse of federal money and the use of phantom or unqualified employees, officials involved in that examination said on Friday.
Mr. Tomlinson was ousted from the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting on Thursday after its inspector general concluded an investigation that was critical of him. That examination looked at his efforts as chairman of the corporation to seek more conservative programs on public radio and television.
But Mr. Tomlinson remains an important official as the chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors. The board, whose members include the secretary of state, plays a central role in public diplomacy. It supervises the government's foreign broadcasting operations, including Radio MartĂ, Radio Sawa and al-Hurra; transmits programs in 61 languages; and says it has more than 100 million listeners each week.
People involved in the inquiry said it involved accusations that Mr. Tomlinson was spending federal money for personal purposes, using board money for corporation activities, using board employees to do corporation work and hiring ghost employees or improperly qualified employees.
In recent weeks, State Department investigators have seized records and e-mail from the Broadcasting Board of Governors, officials said. They have shared some material with the inspector general at the corporation, including e-mail traffic between Mr. Tomlinson and White House officials including Karl Rove, a senior adviser to President Bush and a close friend of Mr. Tomlinson.
Mr. Rove and Mr. Tomlinson became friends in the 1990's when they served on the Board for International Broadcasting, the predecessor agency to the board of governors. Mr. Rove played an important role in Mr. Tomlinson's appointment as chairman of the broadcasting board.
On Thursday Mr. Tomlinson was forced to step down from the corporation, which directs nearly $400 million in federal money to public radio and television, after the board was briefed about the conclusions by its inspector general. In that inquiry, examiners looked at accusations that Mr. Tomlinson improperly used corporation money to promote more conservative programming.
Steven R. Weisman contributed reporting for this article.
