Renowned jazz singer Anita O'Day dies
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Anita O'Day, whose sassy renditions of "Honeysuckle Rose," "Sweet Georgia Brown" and other song standards that made her one of the most respected jazz vocalists of the 1940s and '50s, has died. She was 87.
O'Day died in her sleep early Thursday morning at a convalescent hospital in Los Angeles where she was recovering from a bout with pneumonia, said her manager Robbie Cavolina.
"On Tuesday night, she said to me, get me out of here," Cavolina said. "But it didn't happen."
Once known as the "Jezebel of Jazz" for her reckless, drug-induced lifestyle, O'Day lived to sing and she did so from her teen years until this year when she released "Indestructible!"
"All I ever wanted to do is perform," she said in a June 1999 interview with The Associated Press. "When I'm singing, I'm happy. I'm doing what I can do and this is my contribution to life."
Cavolina recently completed a feature film about O'Day and accompanied her to shows and on tours.
"She got to see how many people really loved her at the shows we did, in New York, in London," Cavolina said. "She had come back after all of this time. She really lived a very full and exciting life.
O'Day was born in Chicago, Ill. She left home at age 12 and often bragged about being "self-made" and never having a singing lesson.
She began her career in her teens and later recorded hits with Stan Kenton and Gene Krupa. Her highly stylized performance of songs like "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine," "Let Me Off Uptown," "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" made her famous the world over.
In her prime, O'Day was described as a scat singer and a natural improviser whose unique interpretations energized the most familiar songs. She inspired many singers, including June Christy and Chris Connor.
Her fame came at a price.
She suffered from a 16-year heroin addiction and an even longer alcohol problem. Wild, drug-related behavior and occasional stints in jail on drug charges earned her the nickname "Jezebel of Jazz," a term she hated.
"I tried everything," she once said. "Curiosity will make you go your own way."She overdosed many times and on one occasion in the late 1940s, it was almost fatal.The experience shocked her into giving up drugs, but she continued to drink.
Her 1981 memoir "High Times Hard Times" tells of her long struggle with drug addiction and her romance with drummer John Poole.
In late 1996, O'Day fell down the stairs of her Hemet, Calif., home after a drinking binge. She was admitted to a hospital with a broken arm but ended up with severe food poisoning and pneumonia.
She survived the ordeal but her recovery - both physical and emotional - was painful. She left the hospital in a wheelchair and didn't walk for nearly a year. Her right hand was paralyzed but worst of all, she said, she had lost her singing voice.
Although she blamed the complications on poor hospital care, the near-death experience convinced O'Day to give up alcohol.
It took nearly a year to get her voice back and start singing again. But once she did, she was right back on stage.
She received a lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1997.
For the last years of her life, O'Day performed at various Los Angeles night spots.
O'Day had no children and no immediate family, Cavolina said.

Dirk Dirksen-S.F. Punk Promoter

The Mabuhay Gardens was a Filippino night club located on Broadway at the end of the North Beach area in San Francisco , where lots of night clubs and topless bars were located . It was a failing night club owned by Ness Aquino . Sometime in 1976 . Ness was approached by Dirk Dirksen to promote punk rock shows at the Mabuhay . Ness agreed , and the rest is history , the PREMIER PUNK PALACE was born.Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys stated that seeing the Sex Pistols , Nuns , and Avengers at Winterland , changed his life . He knew that this was what he wanted to do , form his own punk band . He wasn't alone , also in the audience were the people who would later make up some of San Francisco's most notable Punk bands . The Nuns would become one of the first bands to play at the Mabuhay , The Mary Monday Group was the first band to play there,though, I cannot remember them, or, if they were actually a punk band. Now the stage was set , these punk bands needed a place to play and the Mabuhay was there .Dirk Dirksen made the perfect emcee for the Mab.Coming from a background in television , and very much into experimental theatre and audience participation , this BIZARRE and unusual character turned a failing Filippino night club into a WORLD FAMOUS TOURIST ATTRACTION ! In fact, the Mab would soon become as famous as CBGB's was on the east coast .The Mab was host to many famous bands of that era , including , The DAMNED , DEVO , IGGY POP , Neil Young , The RAMONES , The Nuns , CRIME , The Dead Kennedys Husker Du , DOA , Pink Section, Rozz & Negative Trend and many more . By 1978 , the Mabuhay became to punk rock , what the Filmore West and Winterland were to commercial rock and Dirksen became punk's answer to Bill Graham from:Mabuhay Gardens. This is a little more than I can even begin to write. Dirk passed away last night, in his sleep. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. Many of us wouldn't. He only wanted a band to be good. If he was harsh it wasn't because you sucked but because you could be better. 4 Bands a night, 7 nights a week. Think about it. With love, VKTMS - John, Steve, Lou, Nyna (R.I.P.) Man, that's sad. More than "4 Bands a night, 7 nights a week," it was a SCENE (a concept today's aggregate club owners can't seem to grasp), and no one person was more important to that scene than Dirk. The Jars' second ever SF gig and our next to last gig ever (Dirk: "It's time to can The Jars...") were both at the Fab Mab. For a time it seemed we were there every third Tuesday, and then there for entertainment 2 or 3 nights a week besides. All the bands were always (good naturedly, for punks) on Dirks ass, it meant we loved him. He was an indelible part of the last, most coherent music scene in this here city. Glad he got to do that Mabuhay reunion at the Fillmore earlier this year, he must have gotten a kick out of it. Another Eugene Weekly Radio Winner Bites the Dust

This happened in 2004-whoever wins the Weekly Award disappears from the airwaves shortly afterward!Fortunately(or unfortunately)you still have last year's winner Marc Time to kick around.(and Vinnie and Icky)
What did her in?Was it her calls for impeachment?Her objection to 20 minutes of commercials and weather per hour?Her emphasis on gay rights?The Weekly article keeps it deliberately cryptic.

"Popular local progressive radio talk show host Nancy Stapp of "Breakfast With Nancy" has left the airwaves of Air America-affiliate KOPT 1600 AM radio following a rumored dispute with station management over editorial content and control. Stapp was recently honored with the EW Best of Eugene Award for "Best Local Radio Show or Host."

Station owners John Musumeci and Suzanne Arlie deferred comment on the reasons for the breakup to Churchill Media and KOPT Program Director Liz Kelly. Kelly, in a press release Nov. 10 said, "We are saddened to announce that morning show host Nancy Stapp has left KOPT. … We appreciate Nancy's contribution to our community and our organization as the morning show host on KOPT over the past year. While we are sorry to see her leave Eugene, we wish Nancy the best in her future endeavors as she returns to Taos, New Mexico."

Stapp was also reluctant to talk about why she left the station so abruptly. "What I can say," she said, "is that the folks in Eugene are very intelligent, engaged people and they will draw their own conclusions. In life and not just in work, I find that people definitely judge you by your actions rather than your intentions, and my hope is that people will look at the work that I've done and the work that we were able to do. And when I mean 'we' I really mean this community, because I'm nothing without the voices that I was able to bring on the air."

She will be taking her old job as morning talk show host at the solar-powered KTAO radio (www.ktao.com) in Taos. She was at the station previously for 10 years, and has known station owner and DJ Brian Hockmeyer for 28 years. When asked if she would like to stay in Eugene, she said she loves Eugene, but she signed a non-compete agreement with Churchill Media, and talk radio is what she does best.

Taking her place on the KOPT morning slot is Brian Shaw, who recently left Diamond Peak Media's SUCCESS FM radio. — Ted Taylor"

BLUE SENATE

Tonight George Macaca Allen conceded the Virginia Senate race. This means that the Dems have won control of the Senate 51-49. This has been an overwhelming mandate and a sign that things will be blue for a while.
Whether or not you vote or aren't crazy about the Democrats this has been an overwhelming tidal wave of hope for the future.
Don't piss on my parade-join me in an early thanksgiving.
Much more exciting than Dance with the Stars or the freakin Ducks.
2008 is gonna be a good year.

Eileen Polk, a New York native and Eugene resident who documented the late '70s punk scene in New York City through her camera lens, will open a gallery show at Feinstein's Museum of Unfine Art on Friday, Nov 3.

Polk was a New York teenager in the late seventies and befriended many of the performers and individuals who created and nurtured the punk scene, including The Ramones, Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Frank Zappa and many others.

Polk always had her camera with her when she went to a party or show, and consequently was able to get candid shots. "I was like a fly on the wall – I had my camera on so much that no one even thought about it," she says. "It was like, 'Oh, there she is again.'"

Though she did make attempts to photograph professionally for magazines, Polk's intention morphed to just creating a "personal archive." Getting paid to shoot wasn't as important as simply documenting the many interesting lives and events she encountered. The people she photographed accepted her and her camera's presence because she was a part of the scene, not a journalist trying to infiltrate the community.

Polk was among the last few people to see Sid Vicious on the night of his death, and knows firsthand how the media can sensationalize and distort celebrity lives. She enjoys presenting a truthful view of the people she photographs. "I like to show people the way they are, even if they're not being politically correct," she says.

Her philosophy of photography has always been "to take pictures of things that would otherwise be lost to history. My photos are kind of like a visual anthropology."

Among the photos she plans to have on display are shots of Dee Dee and Joey Ramone, two personal friends of Polk's who have since passed away. She also has shots of Cherry Poppin' Daddies‚ frontman Steve Perry, local politician Pete Sorenson, even Jesse Jackson. Prints of photos in her extensive collection will be available for purchase. Polk's photographs are hanging in the gallery at 537 Willamette through November 30.

Here Comes the Rain Again....

I thought today's radio show went pretty smooth, although it was an overworked corny concept. Playing RAIN songs while it's raining. Part 2 was all about food and I thought it was really funny.
What wasn't funny was that there was a "Meet the Candidates" brunch at a cafe in Junction City with State Senate candidate Vicki Walker, Judicial candidate Debra Vogt, Mayoral candidates Bev Ficek and Mayor Larry Crowley, and all of the city council candidates.
My wife Barb and I were the only voters that showed up. And we have already voted!
What a sad state of affairs where folks are more interested in the Ducks and Beavers games and Dancing with the Stars .
Nevertheless we had a great time and I think that Vicki and Bev are real sweeties.

Is Halloween the new Christmas?

Yup. I said CHRISTmas. I used the C word. In this PC climate of Eugene left coast manners it is no longer appropriate to say "Merry Christmas" -now it is "Happy Holodays". Example:when I went to the Weekly to list my September Christmas show and they called it a "Holiday" show.
Now before you stick me in with Bill O'Reilly and Rush I DO NOT BELIEVE there is a war on Christmas.It just seems that everyone has gone gaga over Halloween this year. Halloween songs all over the radio. Parties and costumes galour.A LOT more hoopla than I remember from last Xmas.
Is it because we have to set the clocks back? Is it because after tonight's celebrations, the rain and cold and darkness comes down on us like a dark curtain?
The pagan holiday of Christmas/Winter Solstice meant it was time to hunker down for a miserable winter. But now, especially with our world weary tatooed youth, the goal post has been moved up to late October.
Hopefully Satan hasn't replaced the Christ child. But in an age when the politician elders line up in lockstep behind cruel and materialistic leaders,it makes sense that what used to be GOOD is now EVIL.When things couldn't get much worse in our national psyche, it makes sense that the Goblins and Ghouls have replaced the good guys.

July 4, 1970 was an unbearable 115-degree day that caused performances in the second annual Atlanta International Pop Festival to be delayed until late that evening. Jimi Hendrix was scheduled for the prime slot that afternoon, but instead went on after midnight. A crowd of 500,000 awaited him that evening, the largest crowd of his career. Jimi chose to perform this show with little theatrics. His focus was solely on the music-- and the music it was! One of very few concerts known to exist by the legendary Band of Gypsies (and easily one of the rarest), this is the finest example of the Gypsies as led by young master Hendrix. In memory of the genius who continues to inspire artists today, the music contained in this film transcends the boundaries of what is known as rock.

Being Sick Sucks!

I hope you don't get it but if you want to be prepared go out today and get nose spray, cough drops, aspirin, tea and chicken soup and prepare for the worst.

"Prince Bandar enjoys easy access to the Oval Office. His family and the Bush family are close. And Woodward told 60 Minutes that Bandar has promised the president that Saudi Arabia will lower oil prices in the months before the election - to ensure the U.S. economy is strong on election day.

Woodward says that Bandar understood that economic conditions were key before a presidential election: “They’re [oil prices] high. And they could go down very quickly. That's the Saudi pledge. Certainly over the summer, or as we get closer to the election, they could increase production several million barrels a day and the price would drop significantly.”"

Move over Oprah - the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, is calling the literary shots this week. Chávez made headlines for his United Nations speech on Wednesday calling President George W. Bush "the devil himself," but a reading suggestion he made in the same speech created a best-seller.
Chávez began his UN speech by displaying a copy of the U.S. writer Noam Chomsky's book "Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance" and recommended that Americans read it instead of watching Superman and Batman movies, which he said "make people stupid."
By Thursday, the book had risen from backlist obscurity to be the No.3 bestseller on Amazon.com. By Friday, it was No.1. Before the speech, the 2004 book reprinted by Owl Books was being outsold by thousands of other titles on the online bookseller's Web site. Chávez did make one mistake: At a news conference after his UN address, he expressed regret at not having met Chomsky before the linguist's death.
A call to Chomsky's house in Lexington, Massachusetts, found him very much alive. "I continue to work and write," he said. He also said he was struggling through "10,000 e-mails" that he had received since the remarks by Chávez. While retired from teaching full time, Chomsky said he still went to his office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, occasionally lecturing and also working on a new book.
Chomsky, 77, said that he was glad that Chávez liked his book, but that he not describe himself as flattered. "We should look at ourselves through our own eyes and not other people's eyes," he said.
Chomsky said he had taken no offense at Chávez's remarks about his being dead. It did land him in the exclusive club of luminaries, like Mark Twain, who was reported dead before his time. $@

Stupid Record Of The Week

To celebrate my new time slot (10 AM till Noon on Sundays!) this week's show will feature a lot of stuff that regular 8-10 listeners have heard but may be new to my recent listeners. I will also be bringing back my Hangover Cures, Celebrity Spotlight and Stupid Record of the Week.
This week's LP I found in McMinville for a buck.It looked like another pleasant piano album from the late 50's and I threw it in my play pile, and didn't get to it for a week.
When I put the needle down what came out was some of the WORST piano playing I have heard in my life! And three tracks in Mr. Edwards decides he's going to let his wife sing and she gives Mrs. Miller a run for her money.
Tonight when I showed the cover to my wife she said "The piano player has TWO RIGHT HANDS!"
Duh- I never noticed till she told me.

Happy Birthday To Me

Normally I don't do birthdays well, but this time I will try to be less of a baby and try to have fun. By the way, another 4 Hour Hangover Sunday 8-12 KWVA.
This cake was from work where myself and the other courier celebrated our birthdays-his was Friday, mine is on Saturday.Thanks to all my friends at work-especially Stefanie, whose going away get-together was a blast. I will miss you Stef!!

CNN News anchor Trashes Sister-in-law Over Bush's Speech

Kyra Phillips today had to tinkle while anchoring Bush's Katrina speech. So while her and her friend chatted in the bathroom, the Nation was treated to her slamming her sister-in-law for being a contol freak(apparently she left her wireless mike on).

The Cat Came Back

Ok. I am in a better mood now. Here's my letter:

CHOPPED-UP EUGENE

Regarding your cover story about City Hall, "Doomed To Demo" (8/17), I'd like to add my two cents as someone who works in Eugene and Corvallis.

On one hand you have the city of Corvallis, with a vibrant artistic downtown filled with small businesses and buildings that convey the homey sense of a small town community. Then there's Eugene, filled with concrete structures that bisect the downtown area and loom over empty storefronts. If you don't believe me, go to both towns at Christmas and observe the amount of downtown shoppers.

The writer of the article obviously favors rebuilding these concrete monoliths that are almost 50 years old. Where is the Eugene that once had its main street (Willamette) running from the butte and train station through downtown? Willamette is chopped up by the ugly 1950s-designed Hilton and part of the Hult Center and shaded by concrete parking garages. Surrounding streets are metered for little or no parking, designed to speed any visitor through downtown as fast as possible.

Yes, rebuilding Eugene's currently earthquake-unsafe city center will cost money — but the result can and should be a kinder, gentler, friendlier downtown that serves the people. Other city and county agencies can be incorporated into a new downtown plan — an example is LCARA, which would benefit by having homeless animals available within walking distance to anyone interested in a new friend. Currently one has to drive miles to get to LCARA or Greenhill.

Maybe a police station that doesn't resemble the set of "Dragnet" would help the citizens warm up to those that protect and serve. Perhaps many local businesses could benefit from a new look downtown. Hello? Eugene CAN do it — contrary to the naysayer writer of your cover story.

Monday Monday-Can't Trust That Day

Having a bad case of the mondays-I saw Fahrenheit 911 again and it made me real angry-if anyone reading this doesn't vote for change in November may you burn in nuclear hell!
As far as my personal life, I sometimes feel that no one really likes me for me, that I am just someone's clown-it makes me depressed.
And getting old really blows-all these TV commercials on losing weight,cleaning your skin, anti-aging, chicks in bikinis after they bought a bag of pills or some piece of plastic exercise thing-all this energy and $$$$ spent on denying that people DO get older.
Should everyone over 40 just crawl off and die somewhere or should we round them up for the gas chamber?
Remember that EVERYONE needs love-love is not just for the young.

1) My show The Sunday Morning Hangover has been entertaining Eugene for almost four years playing obscure and forgotten popular music from the early 1900s up to present day sounds.
2) In the space of Two hours on Sunday mornings on KWVA 88.1 FM I have covered musical genres such as Exotica, Lounge, International, Found Music, Stupid Songs, Bizarre Childrens Music, Jazz, Rock, Country, Folk, Classical, Nostalgia, and Comedy while trying to maintain a palatable mix entertaining enough to listen to even with a Hangover.
3) Past shows have featured Rare and Unreleased tracks not commercially available and unheard on other radio shows.
4) I have produced and obtained Biographic Specials about artists such as Martin Denny, Ray Charles, The Bonzo Dog Band, Brian Eno, Peggy Lee, Henry Mancini, William Shatner, The Kinks, The Beach Boys and Syd Barrett.
5) Recognition of the "Hangover" and other great shows such as "Snap Crackle and Pop" in The Emerald, Eugene Weekly, and the Register Guard newspapers has brought much needed attention to KWVA's alternative format.
6) The Hangover is not just about music. Talk and Discussion segments have included info on the Arts, Hangover Cures, Entertainment News, Obits, Tributes, Horoscopes, Political Comment, Weird News, and Pet Parades.This year we exposed Bush's drunkeness and his affair with Condi,as well as the Administrations botch-up after Hurricane Katrina.

“Rabbit rabbit” is a common superstition, held particularly among children. The most common modern version states that a person should say “rabbit, rabbit” upon waking on the first day of each new month, and on doing so will receive good luck for the remainder of that month.
Origins and history
The exact origin of the superstition is unknown, though it has appeared in print at least as early as 1920 in England, where it is most commonly said to have originated, though some reports place its origins even earlier, into the 1800s. Today it has spread to most of the English-speaking countries of the world, although like all folklore, determining its exact area of distribution is difficult. The superstition is related to the broader belief in the rabbit or hare being a “lucky” animal, as exhibited in the practice of carrying a rabbit's foot for luck.
Variations
As with most folklore, which is traditionally spread by word of mouth, there are numerous variant versions of the “rabbit, rabbit” superstition, in some cases specific to a certain time period or region. There are hundreds of variants, some of the most common of which include:
* The inverse: instead of believing that saying it will bring good luck, believing that not saying it will bring bad luck.
* Instead of saying “rabbit, rabbit”, saying just “rabbit”, or “rabbits”. Some also extend it to three rabbits: “rabbit, rabbit, rabbit,” which has some of the earliest written references.
* The earliest referenced usage may be to saying “rabbits” three times before going to sleep the last night of the month, and then “hares” three times first thing upon waking, though just two years later, it was three “rabbits” in the morning with no “hares” at all.
* Using the night of the new moon (traditionally the first day of the lunar month) instead of the first night of the month.
* Saying “black rabbits” the night before, and “white rabbits” on the morning in question.
* Believing that the effect is stronger on one's month of birth.
* Referring to the first day of each month as “Rabbit Day”.
* Various ways to counteract forgetting to say it, most commonly saying it backwards (“tibbar, tibbar”) before falling asleep.
* A different but related practice of saying “Happy White Rabbit's Day” to someone in order to bring good luck.
* Making “rabbit, rabbit” be the last words said on the last of the month and the first words said on the first of the month.
* One variation involves an element of competition: Saying “rabbit, rabbit” to another person on the first of the month entitles the speaker to the luck of the listener for the duration of the month.
* Traditions also extend to saying on the first of each month: “A pinch and a punch for the first day of the month; white rabbit!” White rabbit is declared to be the “no returns” policy on the “pinch and the punch” the receiver felt. Origins of this saying is unknown.
* A more modern variation is to say “rabbit, rabbit” to someone on the first day of the month, and whoever says it first wins. The idea of luck is not involved.
