Reply from Congressman Peter DeFazio and My Response

Subject:Reply from Congressman Peter DeFazio
Date:Friday, July 13, 2007 1:05:36 PM

Thanks for your message in support of impeaching the President, Vice President, or both. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
I share your outrage at the administration's many transgressions over the last six-plus years. I have used my voice and my vote to oppose the administration on multiple fronts. I have always opposed the war in Iraq. I voted against the so-called USA PATRIOT Act. I voted against the legislation establishing military tribunals, which also included provisions retroactively immunizing administration officials for authorizing torture and provisions allowing the President to detain American citizens indefinitely without charge. I voted against legislation authorizing warrantless wiretapping of American citizens. I have led the effort to prevent the administration from attacking Iran without congressional authorization. Despite my long and vocal record of opposition to the administration's harmful policies, I believe that impeachment is a dubious strategy that will fail to bring about the change our country needs.

Supporters of impeachment need to ask themselves a question: is the primary goal to attempt to personally punish the President and Vice President or is it to reverse the many detrimental policies that have been enacted over the last six years?

If it is the former, then I can understand why individuals would believe an attempt to impeach is the best option. But, if it is the latter, which is what I think the goal should be, then impeachment will not work because even if Members of the House put aside all urgent issues and consumed the next six months with impeachment and then voted to impeach, the Senate will never vote to convict the President or Vice President and remove them from office, meaning at the end of the process they will remain in office with their policies unchanged and all that will have been accomplished is a 6-12 month delay in trying to overturn their harmful policies.
The reason I draw that conclusion is based on the math in the Senate. Even with the Democratic takeover of Congress last November, there are only 51 Senators that caucus with the Democratic Party (including two independents, Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernie Sanders of Vermont). Even if all of these individuals supported impeachment (an unlikely prospect given the large number of conservative Democrats, not to mention Senator Lieberman), it would still require 16 Republicans to vote to convict the President or Vice President (2/3rds of the Senate, 67 votes, are needed to convict and remove from office). There is no evidence that any Republicans, let alone the 16 or likely more that would be required, will consider voting in favor of impeachment.
ust because an impeachment strategy is certain to end in failure doesn't mean Congress is impotent in terms of holding the administration accountable or reversing harmful policies.
I have advocated for an aggressive strategy of hearings, investigations (including the use of subpoena power) and legislation to overturn the administration's harmful policies.
This strategy is already bearing fruit. Although there are not yet quite enough votes in Congress to force a change in the President's Iraq policy, the President has been seriously challenged on Iraq since the Democratic takeover via both hearings and legislation. There have been multiple votes on bringing our troops home and establishing enforceable benchmarks for the administration's policy. This is something that did not happen under Republican control when the President was provided whatever he wanted with no questions asked. Further, the aggressive Democratic oversight has contributed to crumbling support for the President and his war even among members of his own party as evidenced by the recent public defections of key Republican senators.

Further the investigation and hearings into the political firings of U.S. Attorneys (again, something that never would have happened under the prior Republican leadership in Congress) have led to the resignation of several senior Justice Department personnel and hopefully will force out the Attorney General as well.
The Democratic takeover also led the administration to cave-in on its warrantless wiretapping program, agreeing earlier this year to subject future requests to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court. Though, what the administration is actually submitting to the FISA Court needs further oversight.
And, while the administration continues to try to obstruct various investigations, Democratic leaders have not been shy about threatening to issue contempt citations and to take the administration to court to enforce subpoenas for testimony and documents.
Finally, I am concerned that pursuing impeachment would suck all of the oxygen out of Congress, bringing all other issues to a halt and making it impossible to make progress on other priorities, such as taking on the oil companies; reorienting our energy policies toward clean, renewable electricity and fuels, as well as conservation; reforming and funding the No Child Left Behind law; expanding access to health insurance and affordable health care; among many other issues you and I care about.
Since impeachment will not succeed in the Senate, pursuing it will not actually do anything to hold the administration accountable or overturn harmful policies. It would be a hollow effort. So the choice is real action via hearings, investigations and legislation, or symbolic action that won't change anything via impeachment. I prefer real action.
Thanks again for contacting me. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Rep. Peter DeFazio
Fourth District, OREGON

My Response:

Dear Congressman-

Per "do the Math" and to whether we could get enough votes to impeach, or for that matter end the war:

Did our patriot forefathers in the18th century decide that because they"didn't have the numbers" they couldn't declare independence and release themselves from King George?
The commutation of Libby and Miers' giving Congress the finger are both tyrannical and grave offenses-President Bush's lying us into war and the other 999 scandals are grounds for impeachment.
The people are waiting. If we let this president get away with all of this we will have to deal with every other president in the future looking back on all this as the green light to do whatever he or she wants to do, no matter what the consequences.
I appreciate your stance and your voting record-but it is your duty as my representative to uphold the constitution and keep the executive branch in check. It is our duty as Americans to resist tyranny and treason in the White House.

Thanks for your speedy replies and your service,

Marc Time

Happy Fathers Day!!!

I've seen some posts on other blogs about what terrible fathers people have, abusive dads, a lot of deadbeat dads and how this holiday is overrated.
Well my Dad was a good Dad, did the best he could, supported our family, worked his ass off, made time to be with us and was never abusive, He served in WW2 and Korea and stayed active in many civic groups.
Today he is 90 years old, healthy, happy and married and enjoying his life.
I want to say here in case he sees this--"Happy Fathers Day Dad- I Love You!".

Sopranos Finale

***WARNING:SPOILERS***
Everyone is speculating so I might as well also: We,the Audience GOT WHACKED.
The final blackout was David Chase's way of telling us that we don't matter anymore, life goes on even though we aren't watchong and that Tony lives on.
"When the bullet hits your head, you won't see it or hear it"
The more I watch the episode, the more I like it.
The "Good" guy wins, Phil loses, everyone left in the Family moves on to better things and and as AJ says, we should remember the good times.
Whatdya gonna do?

FCC says that Bush and Cheney have Potty Mouths

Court Rebuffs F.C.C. on Fines for Indecency

"If President Bush and Vice President Cheney can blurt out vulgar language, then the government cannot punish broadcast television stations for broadcasting the same words in similarly fleeting contexts.
Under President Bush, the F.C.C. has expanded its indecency rules, taking a much harder line on obscenities uttered on broadcast television and radio. While the judges sent the case back to the commission to rewrite its indecency policy, it said that it was "doubtful" that the agency would be able to "adequately respond to the constitutional and statutory challenges raised by the networks."

The judges said vulgar words are just as often used out of frustration or excitement, and not to convey any broader obscene meaning. "In recent times even the top leaders of our government have used variants of these expletives in a manner that no reasonable person would believe referenced sexual or excretory organs or activities."
Mr. Bush was caught on videotape last July using a common vulgarity(..."shit") that the commission finds objectionable in a conversation with Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain. Three years ago, Mr. Cheney was widely reported to have muttered an angry obscene version of "get lost" to Senator Patrick Leahy ("go fuck yourself") on the floor of the United States Senate."

Of course the most obscene act of the Bush Administration was lying to the American people about the reasons for going into a war that has killed almost 5000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians.

Pissed Off at the Democrats

Keith says it perfectly HERE:

This is, in fact, a comment about… betrayal.

Few men or women elected in our history-whether executive or legislative, state or national-have been sent into office with a mandate more obvious, nor instructions more clear: Get us out of Iraq.

Yet after six months of preparation and execution-half a year gathering the strands of public support; translating into action, the collective will of the nearly 70 percent of Americans who reject this War of Lies, the Democrats have managed only this:

* The Democratic leadership has surrendered to a president-if not the worst president, then easily the most selfish, in our history-who happily blackmails his own people, and uses his own military personnel as hostages to his asinine demand, that the Democrats "give the troops their money";

* The Democratic leadership has agreed to finance the deaths of Americans in a war that has only reduced the security of Americans;

* The Democratic leadership has given Mr. Bush all that he wanted, with the only caveat being, not merely meaningless symbolism about benchmarks for the Iraqi government, but optional meaningless symbolism about benchmarks for the Iraqi government.

* The Democratic leadership has, in sum, claimed a compromise with the Administration, in which the only things truly compromised, are the trust of the voters, the ethics of the Democrats, and the lives of our brave, and doomed, friends, and family, in Iraq.

You, the men and women elected with the simplest of directions-Stop The War-have traded your strength, your bargaining position, and the uniform support of those who elected you… for a handful of magic beans.

You may trot out every political cliché from the soft-soap, inside-the-beltway dictionary of boilerplate sound bites, about how this is the "beginning of the end" of Mr. Bush's "carte blanche" in Iraq, about how this is a "first step."
Well, Senator Reid, the only end at its beginning… is our collective hope that you and your colleagues would do what is right, what is essential, what you were each elected and re-elected to do.

Because this "first step"… is a step right off a cliff.

And this President!

How shameful it would be to watch an adult hold his breath, and threaten to continue to do so, until he turned blue.

But how horrifying it is to watch a President hold his breath and threaten to continue to do so, until innocent and patriotic Americans in harm's way, are bled white.

You lead this country, sir?

You claim to defend it?

And yet when faced with the prospect of someone calling you on your stubbornness–your stubbornness which has cost 3,431 Americans their lives and thousands more their limbs–you, Mr. Bush, imply that if the Democrats don't give you the money and give it to you entirely on your terms, the troops in Iraq will be stranded, or forced to serve longer, or have to throw bullets at the enemy with their bare hands.

How transcendentally, how historically, pathetic.

Any other president from any other moment in the panorama of our history would have, at the outset of this tawdry game of political chicken, declared that no matter what the other political side did, he would insure personally-first, last and always-that the troops would not suffer.

A President, Mr. Bush, uses the carte blanche he has already, not to manipulate an overlap of arriving and departing brigades into a ‘second surge,' but to say in unequivocal terms that if it takes every last dime of the monies already allocated, if it takes reneging on government contracts with Halliburton, he will make sure the troops are safe-even if the only safety to be found, is in getting them the hell out of there.

Well, any true President would have done that, sir.

You instead, used our troops as political pawns, then blamed the Democrats when you did so.

Not that these Democrats, who had this country's support and sympathy up until 48 hours ago, have not since earned all the blame they can carry home.

"We seem to be very near the bleak choice between war and shame," Winston Churchill wrote to Lord Moyne in the days after the British signed the Munich accords with Germany in 1938. "My feeling is that we shall choose shame, and then have war thrown in, a little later…"

That's what this is for the Democrats, isn't it?

Their "Neville Chamberlain moment" before the Second World War. All that's missing is the landing at the airport, with the blinkered leader waving a piece of paper which he naively thought would guarantee "peace in our time," but which his opponent would ignore with deceit.

The Democrats have merely streamlined the process.

Their piece of paper already says Mr. Bush can ignore it, with impugnity.

And where are the Democratic presidential hopefuls this evening? See they not, that to which the Senate and House leadership has blinded itself?

Judging these candidates based on how they voted on the original Iraq authorization, or waiting for apologies for those votes, is ancient history now.

The Democratic nomination is likely to be decided… tomorrow.

The talk of practical politics, the buying into of the President's dishonest construction "fund-the-troops-or-they-will-be-in-jeopardy," the promise of tougher action in September, is falling not on deaf ears, but rather falling on Americans who already told you what to do, and now perceive your ears as closed to practical politics.

Those who seek the Democratic nomination need to-for their own political futures and, with a thousand times more solemnity and importance, for the individual futures of our troops-denounce this betrayal, vote against it, and, if need be, unseat Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi if they continue down this path of guilty, fatal acquiescence to the tragically misguided will of a monomaniacal president.

For, ultimately, at this hour, the entire government has failed us.

* Mr. Reid, Mr. Hoyer, and the other Democrats… have failed us. They negotiated away that which they did not own, but had only been entrusted by us to protect: our collective will as the citizens of this country, that this brazen War of Lies be ended as rapidly and safely as possible.

* Mr. Bush and his government… have failed us. They have behaved venomously and without dignity-of course.
That is all at which Mr. Bush is gifted.

We are the ones providing any element of surprise or shock here.

With the exception of Senator Dodd and Senator Edwards, the Democratic presidential candidates have (so far at least) failed us.

They must now speak, and make plain how they view what has been given away to Mr. Bush, and what is yet to be given away tomorrow, and in the thousand tomorrows to come.

Because for the next fourteen months, the Democratic nominating process–indeed the whole of our political discourse until further notice–has, with the stroke of a cursed pen, become about one thing, and one thing alone.
The electorate figured this out, six months ago.

The President and the Republicans have not-doubtless will not.

The Democrats will figure it out, during the Memorial Day recess, when they go home and many of those who elected them will politely suggest they stay there-and permanently.

Because, on the subject of Iraq the people have been ahead of the media….

Ahead of the government…

Ahead of the politicians…

For the last year, or two years, or maybe three.

Our politics… is now about the answer to one briefly-worded question.

Mr. Bush has failed.

Mr. Warner has failed.

Mr. Reid has failed.

So. Who among us will stop this war-this War of Lies? To he or she, fall the figurative keys to the nation.

To all the others-presidents and majority leaders and candidates and rank-and-file Congressmen and Senators of either party-there is only blame… for this shameful, and bi-partisan, betrayal.

Windows Of The World

Dionne Warwick - Windows Of The World

(written by: Hal David and Burt Bacharach)

The windows of the world are covered with rain,
Where is the sunshine we once knew?
Ev'rybody knows when little children play
They need a sunny day to grow straight and tall.
Let the sun shine through.

The windows of the world are covered with rain,
When will those black skies turn to blue?
Ev'rybody knows when boys grow into men
They start to wonder when their country will call.
Let the sun shine through.

The windows of the world are covered with rain,
What is the whole world coming to?
Ev'rybody knows when men can not be friends
Their quarrel often ends where some have to die.
Let the sun shine through.

The windows of the world are covered with rain,
There must be something we can do.
Ev'rybody knows whenever rain appears
It's really angel tears.
How long must they cry?
Let the sun shine through.

Another Boring Post about our corrupt White House....

White House E-Mail Lost in Private Accounts
Messages May Have Included Discussions About Firing of Eight Prosecutors

By Michael Abramowitz and Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, April 12, 2007

The White House acknowledged yesterday that e-mails dealing with official government business may have been lost because they were improperly sent through private accounts intended to be used for political activities. Democrats have been seeking such missives as part of an investigation into the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

Administration officials said they could offer no estimate of how many e-mails were lost but indicated that some may involve messages from White House senior adviser Karl Rove, whose role in the firings has been under scrutiny by congressional Democrats.
Democrats have charged that Rove and other officials may have used the private accounts, set up through the Republican National Committee, in an effort to avoid normal review. Under federal law, the White House is required to maintain records, including e-mails, involving presidential decision-making and deliberations. White House aides' use of their political e-mail accounts to discuss the prosecutor firings has also fanned Democratic accusations that the actions were politically motivated.
Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which is investigating the use of outside accounts, issued a statement saying that the White House disclosure is "a remarkable admission that raises serious legal and security issues," adding: "The White House has an obligation to disclose all the information it has."

The controversy over the outside e-mail accounts is a byproduct of the ongoing showdown over the prosecutor firings, emerging after the administration recently provided to Congress e-mails from some White House officials that had been sent from their RNC accounts. Scott Jennings, the White House deputy director of political affairs, used a "gwb43.com" e-mail account last August to discuss the replacement of Bud Cummins, who was dismissed as the U.S. attorney for Arkansas, according to one e-mail.

My Latest Radio Project-Airship Radio Theatre

I'll let my captin, Dudley, explain:

"A few months ago now–I don’t recall how many–this project began. At first, it was the offer of an hour of Saturday morning air time from a local AM station. To do what with? I already had a talk show with compatriot, James Stegall. I had started writing comic bits to perform, feeling the talk format stultifying and tired. When OPT waved a handful of cash at us, my first thought was to cobble together my comic interests with an interview show, and see what happened. To that end, I wrote seven scripts (”The James & Dudley Show” Hated it. ). Then circumstances prevailed that caused this idea to be tossed aside; I needed a new direction.

After a lengthy call for voice actors on Craigslist, our number shook down to 7. One of these actors, Mark Lewis, at one of our meetings in our Eugene annex (a bar), suggested the show should be set aboard an airship–a giant dirigible the length of a football field. I jumped right on it–amazingly, I had been playing with a book idea about an eccentric multi-millionaire who builds a giant airship. Thus was Airship Radio Theatre begun.

Well, not really. Concepts are fine, and fairly commonplace. Next, I had to write the scripts.

A long-time desire of mine has been to write for radio. I never pursued it seriously, since radio drama is a tiny niche (but still larger than I suspected). Here was my opportunity. Now…could I do it?

Then we needed a guest.

Composer of “Classical Gas,” Mason Williams, agreed to be that person–our first guest. One show became three–all of them featuring “Classical Gas,” MW, and sketches (written by MW) by the Smothers Brothers (as well as our own brand of sketch comedy).

How to record it? OPT offered us recording time, but we could never fit into their schedule. We borrowed a mic from them, but had no cable, stand, or way to make the computer hear it (mics generate an analog signal), so gave it back (later, they bought us three mics and cables–but what they bought we considered too low end). Enter Mark Lewis again. This time with two beautiful USB mics. We began recording around our diningroom table. I hung a quilt over the archway leading into the livingroom. We were loud and unruly and kept wife and son awake. But it worked.

Now I’m going to build a studio, a simple affair, out in our garage. A table, lights, chairs, thick curtains, a borrowed computer, USB mics… Many summer night I suspect will be spent out there. This will result in parties. And, of course, there will be actors at these parties. And writers. And an inventor. Just like in olden times.

Now we’re talking about how to do the show live, before a recorded audience. I mean, record before a live audience.

Thanks to Marc Time James Stegall, Allan Erickson, Kristi Koons, Mark Lewis, Nicholas Edwards. And Jenna. One mustn’t ever forget one’s wife.

Bong Hits 4 Jesus

Free-Speech Case Divides Bush and Religious Right
By LINDA GREENHOUSE N.Y.Times
Published: March 18, 2007
WASHINGTON, March 17 — A Supreme Court case about the free-speech rights of high school students, to be argued on Monday, has opened an unexpected fissure between the Bush administration and its usual allies on the religious right.
As a result, an appeal that asks the justices to decide whether school officials can squelch or punish student advocacy of illegal drugs has taken on an added dimension as a window on an active front in the culture wars, one that has escaped the notice of most people outside the fray. And as the stakes have grown higher, a case thatonce looked like an easy victory for the government side may prove to be a much closer call.
On the surface, Joseph Frederick’s dispute with his principal, Deborah Morse, at the Juneau-Douglas High School in Alaska five years ago appeared to have little if anything to do with religion — or perhaps with much of anything beyond a bored senior’s attitude and a harried administrator’s impatience.
As the Olympic torch was carried through the streets of Juneau on its way to the 2002 winter games in Salt Lake City, students were allowed to leave the school grounds to watch. The school band and cheerleaders performed. With television cameras focused on the scene, Mr. Frederick and some friends unfurled a 14-foot-long banner with the inscription: “Bong Hits 4 Jesus.”Mr. Frederick later testified that he designed the banner, using a slogan he had seen on a snowboard, “to be meaningless and funny, in order to get on television.” Ms. Morse found no humor but plenty of meaning in the sign, recognizing “bong hits” as a slang reference to using marijuana. She demanded that he take the banner down. When he refused, she tore it down, ordered him to her office, and gave him a 10-day suspension.
Mr. Fredericks’s ensuing lawsuit and the free-speech court battle that resulted, in which he has prevailed so far, is one that, classically, pits official authority against student dissent.

Drinkin' Wine Spo Dee O Dee

Water Vs. Wine
It has been scientifically proven that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria found in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of Poo. However, we do not run that risk when drinking wine (or rum, whiskey, beer or other liquor)
because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling,
filtering and/or fermenting.
WATER = Poo WINE = HEALTH
Ergo: It is better to drink wine and talk stupid than to drink water and be full of crap.

This Sunday: Incorrect and Outsider Music

In a 1996 Pulse magazine article, Irwin Chusid coined the term "outsider music", which he defines as "crackpot and visionary music, where all trails lead essentially one place: over the edge." Chusid has drawn a distinction -- too often lost on deadline-beset journalists -- between the terms "incorrect music" and "outsider music," which he insists are not synonymous and overlap only slightly. Chusid has explained that Incorrect Music was a radio concept, which included all manner of musical "wrongness," often by people who should have known better, or whose sincerity was questionable. Outsider musicians, on the other hand, he defines as "artists who are often termed 'bad' or 'inept' by listeners who judge them by the standards of mainstream popular music. Yet despite dodgy rhythms and a lack of conventional tunefulness, these often self-taught artists radiate an abundance of earnestness and passion. Most importantly, they betray an absence of pretense. And they're worth listening to, often outmatching all contenders for inventiveness and originality."
This show is now available HERE.

I was watching a documentary about Nixon and the Vietnam war tonite and what struck me was the fact that in the 60's and 70's people real cared and got pissed off about this stuff-nowadays all these young bubblegum chicks and pussified boy toys are either too stupid or too self absorbed and selfish to get off their fat asses and demand impeachment.
This asshole criminal presnit GW and his handler Dick have got to be run out of town or else we are all gonna be fucked.

Gary Phillips was a great guitarist and played in Copperhead with John Cippolina, Earhquake, the Greg Kihn Band, Sudden Fun,and worked at Berserkeley Records with great legends such as the Rubinoos and Jonathan Richman.
He used to hang with us at Rather Ripped and we would bust his stones constantly. He was a fun guy who LOVED powerpop, Rock and Roll and shooting the shit, A special blog has been set up here:(http://garyphillips.blogspot.com/) in memory of another great rocker who died way too soon.

Rather Ripped, Rick R.I.P. and Ray Remembers

I found out this week that my friend and ex partying co-worker from Rather Ripped Records in the late 70's Rick Johnson died last week after a long illness.
Rick was once my best friend's roommate, a bright happy guy who knew a lot aboumusicand like all of us in the 70's LOVED to party. We spent a lot of time together at Rather Ripped Records, the world's best record store located in Berkeley California north of campus until it's demise in the early 80's.
I will miss Rick who died in his early 50's-too young too soon...
More on the Rather Ripped story-My fiend Ray Farrell who conspired with me and others to foist punk rock upon the world in the 70's is now a big wig at E Music and wrote to us regarding the using of the words "Rather Ripped" by Sonic Youth as the title of their latest CD.:

"The store was gone before the band first performed in California which
was late 84 or early 85. That was when I met them as I booked their west
coast dates. When they were preparing the new album, Thurston of the band sent an
email saying- "thinking of calling the al bum Rather Ripped"... wasn't
that a record store you worked in?" I responded with a few anecdotes-
that it was the model for Amoeba Records; the legendary Patti Smith
poetry readings; and an in store where Roky Erickson told anyone that
would look him in the eye that he was "watchin' you die". Thurston forwarded that to the band. Thurston liked the way the title flowed and the multiple connotations it can have. In the context of the new album, it was the first time in many albums where the band just recorded an album without much preproduction. They made a more
spontaneous record and "rather ripped" was the best way to describe it.
Steve Shelley, SY's drummer was the only one that had reservations about
the title. I told him that when the store existed, "ripped" could mean a
number of things- elegantly stoned or ripped off. I told him that Joe Strummer had come to the store one afternoon with a mutual friend and wanted to s ee Commander Cody play in Cotati. On the way up, Joe asked " so Rather Ripped- does that mean that you see yourselves as being ripped off by The Man?" Steve says, that's exactly what I'm afraid of- rock critics using the title against us saying that were ripping off our fans. Don't know if you remember Byron Coley, music writer. He worked at Rhino (the store) in the RRR days. He used to visit RRR regularly He's one of Thurstons' best friends and they share a love of archiving music obscurities especially the 70's- small run pressings of artists vanity projects; experimental labels like 1750 Arch and the like. I saw the two of them at a poetry reading just after RR came out. Byron says to me - kinda weird how the album is called Rather Ripped, huh? Must make you feel like you're in a time tube having two completely periods of your life reflected together"
Also- one of my regular RRR customers John "Pinksocks" Silva, went on to manage Nirvana, Beck, Sonic Youth among others. He loved the idea of calling it "Rather Ripped". While I'm on the subject of RRR anecdotes--- A few years ago I did a promotion on eMusic with the Cure. When I met their manager he looked at me and said, Ray Farrell- you sold me my first Cure record- a UK 45 of "Boys Don't Cry" he said he was a power pop fanatic at the time and that I said it was a natural step. A couple of years ago, some old friends and I went to the Freight And Salvage to
see a Holy Modal Rounders reunion. There were a bunch of cooler older guys with long white hair attending the show. One came up to me and said, "You sold me my first Planxty record and now I have a radio show
on KPFA!" The last time I remember talking about the store with Thurston was on a
road trip we took with John Fahey in 96. Thurston booked a short northeast tour for two of them as solo perfo rmers. Fahey had a mercurial wit and a penchant for obscure detail. In the car one day we talked about the early -mid 70's folk scene. He knew a lot of Berkeley people back then- had plenty of anecdotes about the Freight And Salvage, Robbie Basho, Country Joe McDonald, etc. I told them that working in a used
record store in Berkeley in the 70's, we would get a lot of trade ins that would have the owners stoned poetry or attempts at songwriting scribbled on to the inner sleeve or on separate paper stuffed in the jacket. I collected most of them along with local punk flyers. I always referenced the album it came from because then it was clear how lets say "George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass' would inspire some mopey
stoned spinoff of one of the songs. Fahey said that I should make a book
out of it called Proverbial Eloquence of the Rather Ripped. And that Robbie Basho likely penned a few of them. Unfortunately, that stuff didn't survive my
various moves since those days."

A Treasonous President

Proof that Bush and Cheney committed Treason by outing a CIA agent in a revenge act to cover up the lies that led us to war.
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/013107Z.shtml
"Cheney's Handwritten Notes Implicate Bush in Plame Affair
By Jason Leopold and Marc Ash
t r u t h o u t | Report
Wednesday 31 January 2007
Copies of handwritten notes by Vice President Dick Cheney, introduced at trial by defense attorneys for former White House staffer I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, would appear to implicate George W. Bush in the Plame CIA Leak case.
Bush has long maintained that he was unaware of attacks by any member of his administration against [former ambassador Joseph] Wilson. The ex-envoy's stinging rebukes of the administration's use of pre-war Iraq intelligence led Libby and other White House officials to leak Wilson's wife's covert CIA status to reporters in July 2003 in an act of retaliation.
But Cheney's notes, which were introduced into evidence Tuesday during Libby's perjury and obstruction-of-justice trial, call into question the truthfulness of President Bush's vehement denials about his prior knowledge of the attacks against Wilson. The revelation that Bush may have known all along that there was an effort by members of his office to discredit the former ambassador begs the question: Was the president also aware that senior members of his administration compromised Valerie Plame's undercover role with the CIA?"

The Songs of Betty Boop!

This Sunday I will feature an hour of great 1930's Betty Boop cartoon songs that I painstakenly upped and converted-all sung by Mae Questal, also the voice of Olive Oyl.
Available HERE for Download and Podcast.
From:http://www.assumption.edu/ahc/1920s/BoopAndJazz.html
If we do not count King Vidor's first talking film, "Hallelujah" (M-G-M, 1929), made for the African-American market with an all-black cast, which featured an appearance by Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra, the first use of jazz music and jazz musicians in film dates from the "Betty Boop" cartoons of the early 1930s. Betty was the creation of the Fleischer brothers, Jewish immigrants from Austria, who set out, with financing from Paramount, to challenge Walt Disney. In almost every respect their cartoons differed from Disney's. This was true of their style of animation, which utilized film of human motion. It was true of theme and story line. Betty is, along with Popeye and Superman, the best known of their creations. She is also, as befitted a "flapper," the one who introduced jazz music to the movies.

Several of the "Betty Boop" cartoons used jazz songs, not simply as background music, but for style of movement. One of the most interesting of these for our purposes is "Minnie, the Moocher." The film begins with live action footage of Cab Calloway, who made the song his trademark, and his Cotton Club Orchestra (he had replaced Ellington as the club's headliner). Cab sings and dances the title song. When the animation begins, Betty and her father, a Jew from Austria, perhaps based upon the Fleischers' own father, are arguing. He insists that she must follow the family tradition and eat a traditional dish. Betty tearfully refuses. The scene is a thinly disguised parody of "The Jazz Singer." Like Jakie Rabinowitz, Betty decides to run away. Like Jakie, she too runs toward jazz music. But, unlike Jakie, Betty runs toward the real thing. No "Toot, Toot, Tootsie" for her. With her boyfriend, the dog Bimbo, she runs off to the strains of "Minnie, the Moocher."

Minnie, Calloway sings, had learned "to kick the gong around," to use opium, from her boy friend "Smoky" whose drug of choice was cocaine. Although the cartoon does not show Betty taking any drug, she does, to the accompaniment of Cab's version of the song, find herself in a dream world. Her experiences, however, do not parallel Minnie's. Minnie dreamed that the King of Sweden "was giving her things that she was needin'." Instead Betty meets a ghostly walrus with enlarged lips who sings the song. Betty and Bimbo are terrified, as well they should be, for the Walrus transforms itself into a spectral cat whose kittens suck it dry and into a prison guard who escorts skeletons to the electric chair, among other transmigrations. In all of these, the walrus/cat/guard moves like Cab Calloway. At one point, in a reversal of a Stepin Fetchit gag, Betty and Bimbo turn black with fear. Finally, Betty and Bimbo run for their lives, pursued by various goblins and skeletons. Bimbo seeks refuge in the dog house. Betty climbs into her own bed. The farewell letter she left for her parents obligingly shreds itself, leaving the message "Home, Sweet, Home."

"I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal, You" also begins with live action footage, this time of Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra performing the title song. When the animation begins, Koko the clown and Bimbo are carrying Betty in a sedan chair across the African veldt. Betty has brown skin, the same tone as that used to depict the Africans who kidnap her. Koko and Bimbo set out to rescue her but instead find themselves fleeing for their lives as a tribal chief pursues them. He then turns into Armstrong's head and then into a tribal god, all the while singing "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead." Here again the Fleischers made use of enlarged lips in depicting the god's head. Koko and Bimbo manage to rescue Betty with the help of a porcupine which wanders across their path. The trio again run for their lives, pursued this time by the entire village. They are saved when a volcano erupts, killing all of their pursuers. The storyline, as with "Minnie," owed nothing to the song lyrics.

In "Old Man of the Mountain" the Fleischers used the storyline of the song for their own plot. Again, live action footage begins the film. Again it is Cab Calloway and the Cotton Club Orchestra performing "Minnie the Moocher." Again, the Fleischers use Calloway's dance routine as the basis for the animated motions of both the Old Man and of Betty, who sing and dance a duet. Once "Minnie the Moocher" is done, Calloway announces "The Old Man of the Mountain," and the animation begins. It starts with a lion in a guardhouse who straps on a pair of rabbits as though they were roller skates and sets off down the mountain to warn everyone that the "Old Man" is on the prowl. This sets off a virtual stampede as everyone scrambles to get out of his way. All except Betty, that is. She comes out of her "tourist house lodgings" and asks what's going on. An owl, in Calloway's voice, sings:

With a long, white beard and a crooked stare,
He tramps along with the folks all scared;
With a twinkle in his eye, he passes them by,
The Old Man of the Mountain!

Oh, he wears long hair and his feet are bare,
They say he's mad as a grizzly bear,
His cares are none and he fears no one,
The Old Man of the Mountain!

He talks with the bears when he's lonely,
He sleeps with the sky for a tent,
And he'll eat you up when he's hungry,
And it wouldn't cost him a red cent!

And he'll live as long as an old oak tree,
He'll eat up fools like you and me,
Oh, I often sigh and jump and cry
At the Old Man of the Mountain!

Betty announces her intent to "see this Old Man of the Mountain" and heads up the path. When she gets to the top, she and the Old Man do their duet:

Old Man: You got to ho-de-ho
Betty: You got to ho-de-ho
Old Man: You got to hi-de-hi
Betty: You got to hi-de-hi
Old Man: You got to he-de-he
To get along with me!
Betty: Yeah, man! How do?
Old Man: You've gotta learn my song
Betty: I gotta learn your song
Old Man: If you do me wrong
Betty: I'm gonna do you wrong.
Old Man: You gotta kick the gong
To get along with me!

The duet ends abruptly when the Old Man grabs for Betty. She dashes off. He follows and manages to get a hand on her dress which she wiggles out of. The dress then slaps the Old Man for Betty and runs over to where she is hiding behind a tree. Betty, reunited with her clothes, clambers up the tree. The Old Man tries to get her down but animals of all sorts come to her rescue and tie his arms and legs in knots.

These cartoons were the first opportunity many viewers had of seeing Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway perform. For some in the audience it was the first time they heard real jazz rather than the "jazzy" songs of Jolson. The music was as irreverent and as sensual as they had heard. It dealt with sex, drugs, violence. Further, the cartoons themselves were equally transgressive. In Betty's first cartoon appearancee, "Dizzy Dishes," she is a dog or, more precisely, a cross between a woman and a dog. Bimbo, the star of the cartoon, falls for her at once. In "Minnie the Moocher," her seventeenth cartoon appearance, she is the daughter of Jewish immigrant parents. Bimbo is her friend but there is no hint of romance. In "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead," Betty's thirty-second cartoon, she is African. There is, again, no romance.

"I'll Be Glad When You're Dead" is not the only cartoon in which Betty is not white. In "Betty Boop's Bamboo Isle," her thirty-third cartoon, she is Samoan. Bimbo arrives at Bamboo Isle in a motor boat which transforms itself into a dog house. He finds himself in Betty's canoe. After he sings her a song, they disembark in a clearing. When other Samoans arrive, Bimbo turns himself into a native by hitting himself over the head with a bone. This raises a lump through which he sticks the bone. The Fleischers illustrated the force of the blow with circles swimming around Bimbo's head. He grabs a couple of these and uses them as earrings. Then he rubs his cheeks with dirt. The disguise fools the Samoans. There are several more musical numbers, including one in which Betty does a hula wearing only a grass skirt and a lei. A rain storm breaks up the entertainment. It also washes the dirt from Bimbo's cheeks revealing him to be white. This angers the Samoans who chase after him and Betty. Fortunately, the doghouse turns back into a motorboat, and they escape. In the last scene Betty and Bimbo share a romantic kiss.

The Fleischer brothers did more than introduce jazz to the movies. They also added a discordant voice to the ongoing discussion in the mass media about race, ethnicity, and nationality. They made cartoons in which nothing was fixed. Betty was white, except in those cartoons in which she was not. She was the daughter of Jewish immigrants in one cartoon, but not in any others. Bimbo, who usually remained a dog, was her romantic interest in some of the cartoons but not in others. Louis Armstrong provided the voice for the African chasing Bimbo and Koko which the Fleischers illustrated using crude stereotypes. Cab Calloway provided the voice for the Old Man of the Mountain, who was white. Bimbo attempted to "pass" as Samoan but was discovered. On "Bamboo Isle" people of color ruled and enforced their own racial hierarchy.

The cartoons played equally fast and loose with notions of female virtue. In "Boop-Oop-A-Doop" Betty is a circus performer. Her act is so hot that the ringmaster follows her into her tent and attempts to force himself upon her. She sings:

You can feed me bread and water,
Or a great big bale of hay,
But don't take my boop-oop-a-doop away!

You can say my voice is awful,
Or my songs are too risquŽ,
Oh, but don't take my boop-oop-a-doop away!

Just as he succeeds in getting on top of her, Koko the clown comes to the rescue. He and the ringmaster fight. Koko wins. He goes over to Betty and whispers something in her ear. "No! He couldn't take my boop-oop-a-doop away!" she replies. Then she and Koko kiss. Betty's "boop-oop-a-doop," her trademark, is not her virginity, what a conventional heroine would seek to preserve. Instead it is her sensuous approach to life. That is perhaps why she and Koko, who usually plays relatively minor roles in Betty's cartoons, when he appears at all, wind up in a romantic clinch at the end.

Blue Music

On the Sunday Morning Hangover-KWVA 88.1 at 11AM- an hour of Blue Music in celebration of the Museum of Unfine Art's 5 year birthday bash this coming thursday.

At 10 AM an Hour of interviews and the Best tracks by The Free Design.
"Despite the almost unbelievable lack of chart success they had keen followers ...a brothers and sisters act who struck no poses but sang melodic popular music was ostracized. The craftmanship of the Free Design's productions, the intricate arrangements, the timelessness of the songs and the purity and natural beauty of their voices were in contrast with the trends being set by their contemporaries.
The sound of Free Design is modern, rich orchestration with a choral approach to pop, simultaneously nostalgic and bracingly fresh. Although the band remained obscure and unnoticed by the media it is not strange that nowadays bands as Cornelius, Pizzicato Five, Blueboy, Gentle People, Louis Philippe, Tomorrow's World, Stereolab and Belle and Sebastian have found a source of inspiration with the prolific career of the Free Design."

WES ROBINSON-SF Punk Promoter

We used to affectionately call him "Wes the Mess" because of his inept ways of setting gigs up.One time The Jars, the Mondellos and others bands arrived to play downtown Berkeley's Provo Park on July 4 1979 and Wes was the promoter. After the bands started to set up we realized there was no electrical power! Someone had to get a bolt cutter to break into the power box.
He really was a great guy but we always wondered what kind of dope he was on and if we could get some. Ruthie's Inn was a trip and he was special to the Bay Area punk scene.
Him and Dirk ,gone within months of each other.

From the Roadrunner Records site:
"Legendary Ruthie's Inn Promoter WES ROBINSON Dead At 77 - Jan. 2, 2007
Wes Robinson founder of the legendary Ruthie's Inn on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, California — a mecca for San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal and punk acts in the 1980s (everyone from BAD BRAINS to SOCIAL DISTORTION, then later METALLICA, EXODUS, POSSESSED and DEATH ANGEL, played there) — passed away on December 31, 2006, reportedly after having fallen down a flight of stairs of at his studio in Oakland (although the cause of his death has not yet been officially released). Robinson was 77 years old.
Shortly before his death, Robinson was working on a documentary about Ruthie's Inn, featuring footage shot at a Ruthie's Inn "reunion show" (flyer), which took place on September 23, 2006 at Nimby Warehouse in Oakland. Performers at the concert included FANG, NO ALTERNATIVE, SOCIAL UNREST, VERBAL ABUSE, ALL TIME HIGHS, ARNOCORPS, STONE VENGEANCE, and PROUDFLESH."

Can anyone think of a pop star that has NOT been influenced by James Brown? Even two of my old bands ripped him off mercilessly.

Grinches Try To Steal Christmas

RANDI PIERCE/Special to the Herald
Bill Trimarco and Lisa Jensen stand next to their peace wreath at their home near Pagosa Springs on Friday. The couple received a letter Tuesday from their subdivision’s homeowners’ association telling them to take down the sign or face a fine of $25 per day.
