I think I'm CRAZY

This video is an experiment to see how rapidly the theremin can be injected into the world's collective consciousness. It's amazing that not everyone knows what a theremin is. It was one of the first electronic musical instruments ever made and it was invented in 1919. Are Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse from Gnarls Barkley really theremin players? There's only one way to find out!

The main theremin was passed through iZotope Trash, an awesome software guitar effects plugin. The video was edited entirely in Adobe After Effects. The hand on the carpet was to simulate wind noise, definitely cause for confusion. This also means all the parts of the song were performed with hands only. CRAZY!

In 1994, for example, The First Lady's Tree in the Blue Room (the focal point each year) was Decorated with drug paraphernalia, sex toys, and pornographic ornaments, all personally approved by Hillary as the invited artists' depictions of the theme, "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

Digital backlash drives vinyl revival

Some audiophiles and independent music industry watchers predict the resurgence of new releases on vinyl will send the compact disc format the way of the eight-track tape.

Vinyl lovers are thrilled by the recent trend of more bands putting out records, accompanied at purchase by free MP3 download codes. But the phenomenon still represents only a fraction of overall music sales when compared to CDs and paid digital releases.

One thing dealers and shoppers at the 20th annual Eugene Record Convention can’t quite predict is how much of the merchandise for sale during the massive Sunday event will be these new LPs and vinyl singles, as opposed to vintage records. Vinyl seems to be the cool thing to do if you’re a trendy band such as the Arcade Fire, Radiohead or the Decemberists.

“I’ll be looking for albums I already have but don’t have on vinyl,” composer and music collector McKenzie Stubbert said of his strategy for Sunday’s show.

Although Stubbert’s music consumption habits probably are not typical, they represent a slowly increasing trend toward vinyl as the format of choice for buyers who want a tangible copy of their favorite music.

Stubbert has amassed countless digital-format songs, all stored on his computer. But when he moved to a new place and wanted only one media player in his living room, the CD player was out and record player was in.

Musicians, collectors and DJs probably still are the main buyers for vinyl in the resale market. But there’s a subset of more typical music fans, or “superfans,” who will buy vinyl even if they don’t have a turntable — if the artist sports the proper indie sheen.

In a Wired magazine commentary piece in October 2007, writer Eliot Van Buskirk predicted vinyl’s increased sales would further damage CD sales. He said big labels are not getting on board with the vinyl upswing, but then, they are traditionally slow-moving.

Van Buskirk also quoted insiders as saying the Recording Industry Association of America underestimates vinyl sales because it doesn’t count indie shops, indie labels or music sold at concerts.

True as that might be, some believe that people buy new vinyl for reasons that don’t necessarily affect sales of other formats.

Rob Jones, owner of the Portland label Jealous Butcher Records, got into vinyl a few years ago when he reissued the Decemberists’ “Her Majesty.” The band’s label, Kill Rock Stars, didn’t want to deal with putting it out in record form.

“It’s expensive; there is just no way around that,” he said, adding that it doesn’t always make economic sense to put something out on vinyl as a vanity project of the artist.

“The indie labels that are putting out vinyl, they are savvy. They are not going to do something just because it is trendy.”

Vinyl “didn’t ever really go away. People just starting paying attention to something else,” said Jones, who grew up in Eugene but moved to Portland about 10 years ago.

“The thing about vinyl is there aren’t more people manufacturing it. The same people for the last 20 years are still the ones doing it.”

Jones said more releases are definitely coming out of those same places, but it’s in small batches. Jones estimated he pressed and sold 3,500 to 4,000 copies of “Her Majesty,” while the CD form has moved more than 100,000 units.

In April, Kill Rock Stars and Jealous Butcher will release Decemberists’ singer-songwriter Colin Meloy’s new solo project, “Colin Meloy Sings Live!” It will be sold simultaneously on CD and a limited run, two-disc record.

Jones said a CD costs between 50 cents and $1 to produce, while vinyl costs more than $2. And the double-gatefold LP Meloy created costs $7 per unit just to produce.

“The audience for them is so much more limited,” he said. “All I’m doing is adding to the market share.”

That means he’s marketing to people who tend to buy the vinyl in addition to whatever other format they already would have purchased were the vinyl not available.

“I’m really into reissuing things that already have a base audience,” he said. “I don’t want to put out something that’s not going to sell, because that’s no fun for anyone.

“Vinyl is cool,” said Jones. “Not just because I make it, but it’s big and heavy and tangible.”

Jones joked that the increased number of releases in the indie music could be attributed to a “return to family values.” He might not be far off, at least about a return to old-school values in a changing world.

Might CDs soon be obsolete?

Eugene Record Convention organizer Bill Finneran said CDs might turn out to be a flash in the historical pan, made obsolete by how easy it is to skip the physical disc altogether and go straight to digital. But that trend hasn’t really threatened vinyl.

“You’ve got to remember that since the early part of the 20th century, records have been made, so there are so many out there still,” Finneran said. “It’s real hard to knock something out that’s been out there that long.”

Locally, young people have been into collecting vinyl for years.

“When people start getting into music, they start figuring out this doesn’t sound very good and they start looking for something,” he said. “A good analog recording will always sound better than a digital one.”

Finneran has noticed an increase in the variety of new music being released or reissued on vinyl. He said he thinks that’s driven by the basic human need to have something to hold and explore, in addition to listening to it.

“People are collectors at heart,” he said. “For years, there was a lull when there was hardly anything coming out in vinyl.”

Finneran said the market for making new product, if limited, is there. He noted that amazon.com has a vinyl-only store with 150,000 titles.

Finneran said Len Horo­witz, who is one of the world’s experts on vinyl recordings, will be at the convention to answer questions about getting a record made or any related topic.

Local retro-surf/instrumental band Heavenly Oceans released its latest work, “The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack,” as a vinyl package that included a free CD. But that decision was driven more by artistic and personal, rather than financial, factors. Band member and graphic designer Tony Figoli spent almost 40 hours designing its cover.

It’s still a niche market

Other examples of records coming out from independent or small labels are myriad, but the production totals remain small compared to CDs.

Suicide Squeeze Records, for example, has been releasing 2,000 vinyl copies from seven artists each year. But the product seems to be marketed as a collector’s item, not something the company thinks will catch fire and replace other formats.

The first in the 2008 series comes out later this month. Past releases have featured Elliott Smith and Of Montreal.

Reverend Marc Time, host of KWVA-FM’s “The Sunday Morning Hangover,” said he’s been collecting records for decades. He has enjoyed the upswing in new vinyl releases, but sees a downside as his esoteric hobby becomes more mainstream.

Today, the Reverend said the thrill of the vinyl hunt often is subverted by those who are looking for records only to turn a profit.

“It used to be a secret,” he said. “Now everyone’s in on it, and it’s not as much fun anymore.”

Still, he said, the vinyl-loving underground is alive and kicking.

“Believe me, it’s an ultra-nerd festival,” he said of the convention. “You know the type: They kind of dress bad and smell bad, but they are really into the music.”

The Reverend spends a lot of time at the Museum of Unfine Art, where a number of those types are habitues.

“It seems like the only people interested in (new) vinyl were the DJs,” he said of the time before a noticeable resurgence. “I’ve noticed a lot of people are coming in (to the museum) and asking for stuff on vinyl.

“I don’t know why that is. I do know Shawn (DiFiore, the shop’s owner) is selling a lot of turntables.

“Maybe it’s a rebellion against this whole clinical MP3 thing.”

It should have been $3000. Now THAT would really do the trick.
Why not? I'm sure we are still spending that much per taxpayer for the war.

What to do if your tax rebate is only $300?
You cannot afford the $700 face value of a Super Bowl ticket, but at $8.99 a pound, you could purchase 33 pounds of filet mignon for your Super Bowl party.

The going online rate for Super Bowl tickets was in the $6,000 neighborhood yesterday. You only have $300? A signed Eli Manning New York Giants' jersey was selling for $299.

At a cost of $5.85, you could make 51 trips the length of the New Jersey Turnpike, and would have $1.65 left over for coffee.

Of course, when the tolls are increased fivefold that would be only 10 trips, though you would have the satisfaction of knowing you're doing your part to cut New Jersey's debt.

According to apartments.com, the least expensive one-bedroom apartment at the new Bristol Station apartments in Carteret is $1,300 a month. Three hundred dollars will not quite cover one week.

Tuition at Middlesex County College is $85.55 per credit. Three hundred dollars will pay for one three-credit course, with $44 to spare for a textbook.

Or, for $299.95 in an online auction yesterday, you could have purchased a 1848 edition of "Dombey & Son," an underrated novel by Charles Dickens.

In one year food prices have increased by 4.8 percent. At $200 a week for groceries that's an increase of $9.60 a week, or $499 for the year.

Sorry, that extra $300 will not cover the cost beyond July.

If you drive 15,000 miles a year and get 20 miles per gallon you will need to purchase 750 gallons of gas. At yesterday's average price of $2.87, according to newjerseygasprices.com, your annual cost for gasoline would be $2,152.50.

One year ago the average price of gasoline was $2.08, which would have put your annual bill at $1,560. Do the math. You're annual bill has spiked to $592.50. When you get that check from the government for $300, you've only covered half the increase.

Subject: On behalf of Prudence May She Rest In Peace.
Body: My pug, and loyal friend, Prudence died today at around 4:55 AM today.

Lots of you knew her and I'm sure would agree that she was one of the sweetest furballs around. She lived a long love, fun, and cookie-filled life. She was 17. I knew I'd be upset when she passed and I wouldn't be the same person I am now if it hadn't been for her. She really was a loyal friend and was really there in tough times. It was really hard to see her go, but thankfully she passed without too much prolonged discomfort...There is a memorial for her at the Museum of Unfine Art.

Prudence will be missed by myself and many others. If I could have I would have thanked her for years of companionship and fun but I'm pretty sure she only understood a dozen or so phrases and words of English, but who knows, maybe she had a greater a sense of syntax than I realized. She was damn smart. And like my mom said, she really seemed to listen with intent to everything that was said.

Syncopated Pandemonium

A long time ago, over 30 years ago,I had a radio program on WSHU-FM, a 1000 watt station owned by Sacred Heart University, Fairfield Connecticut.
WSHU's signal covered southwestern Connecticut and parts of New York's Long Island.
Every Thursday night I would take to the air for 4 hours to do my radio program "Syncopated Pandemonium"(from Pink Floyd's Ummagumma),a series of specials on most of the new progressive rock, space rock, and glam rock acts of the early 70's.

It has been 30 years since hearing from any Syncopated Pandemonium listeners but today I heard from one of my old listeners from WSHU- Sport Murphy from Long Island NY-

"Are you in love with the Bonzo Dog Band..."were the words that caught me, years anon while trawling the megahertz. Caught me and kept me listening to WSHU and Syncopated Pandemonium.
I was a callow teen... called you all the time from across the Sound to request Bonzos, Van Der Graaf, et al. Your on-air efforts were immeasurably influential and it's a delight to discover that you're still at it and still marvelous. You likely don't recall me, but I still use the nickname you bestowed (Sport the Odd Boy, now just plain Sport) back in the long-ago.
Without taking up your time unduly, thanks for many hours of kind telephonic indulgence and mind-opening music at a time when, as a transplanted NYC kid lost in the dire drear of Long Island, I needed both very badly.

The Next President

Well,obviously Edwards is NOT ahead, since Obama is killing him in N.H. and he mopped the floor with Edwards and Clinton in Iowa.
But surveys show that Edwards received the best reviews in the last debate-and Obama has yet to explain mistating the facts when it comes to his buddies working as lobbyists for the Medical Industry. Up till now I have not been too happy with his somewhat lukewarm leftism and his remarks about unions. But I am very excited at his victories.
Of course I will support Barack if he is the nominee, I just hope he can weather the shitstorm the Repubs throw at him. Still, Edwards is the one who is moving candidates from both parties to a the left, and even if he is not the next prez he is having a huge impact on Politics in 2008.
May the best man or woman win-I just want to make sure that we don't have a rerun of 2000 or 2004.

I rewound the video and sure enough, the first two people through the door were wearing protest shirts — “Impeach Bush” and “Out Of Iraq”.
I don’t know who these brave souls are, but I thought I’d thank them for waiting in line to get the chance to make their statement and give them props for getting the holidays off to a great start and trying to spread some good will. We can only hope security didn’t tackle, tase or beat them…"

House Votes To Impeach Cheney and NO ONE notices

This article by Dave Lindorff here at http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/lindorff/036 sums up what happened this week. This was a very HISTORIC vote and NO ONE Covered it in the News! I told people at work, they didn't believe me-I told my good friend and he accused me of being on LSD!

Highlights from Dave's excellent summation:

"Dave Lindorff: Suddenly, Impeachment Hearings are Starting to Look Likely

You wouldn't know it if you just watch TV news or read the corporate press, but this past Tuesday, something remarkable happened. Despite the pig-headed opposition of the Democratic Party's top congressional leadership, a majority of the House, including three Republicans, voted to send Dennis Kucinich's long sidelined Cheney impeachment bill (H Res 333) to the Judiciary Committee for hearings.

The vote was 218 to 194.

For the Judiciary Committee to sit on it now and not schedule a hearing would be a gross travesty of parliamentary procedure and custom.

Indeed, some House members not associated with Kucinich's resolution are now openly calling for immediate hearings into Cheney's impeachable actions -- specifically lying the country into a war in Iraq and threatening war with Iran.

One indication of the change in the political climate in the House is the announcement by Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL), a six-term congressman and a member of the House Judiciary Committee, that he will call for the Judiciary Committee to take up Kucinich's impeachment bill. This is significant because Wexler, no left-wing hothead, is not a co-signer of the Kucinich bill.

In an e-mail message to constituents, Wexler said: "I share your belief that Vice President Cheney must answer for his deceptive actions in office, particularly with regard to the preparations for the Iraq war and the revelation of the identity of covert agent Valerie Plame Wilson as part of political retribution against her husband."

"...Cheney and the Bush Administration have demonstrated a consistent pattern of abusing the law and misleading Congress and the American people. We see the consequences of these actions abroad in Iraq and at home through the violations of our civil liberties. The American people are served well with a legitimate and thorough impeachment inquiry. I will urge the Judiciary Committee to schedule impeachment hearings immediately and not let this issue languish as it has over the last six months. Only through hearings can we begin to correct the abuses of Dick Cheney and the Bush Administration; and if it is determined in these hearings that Vice President Cheney has committed High Crimes and Misdemeanors, he should be impeached and removed from office. It is time for Congress to expose the multitude of misdeeds of the Administration and I am hopeful that the Judiciary Committee will expeditiously begin an investigation of this matter."

Also calling for prompt action by the Judiciary Committee in the wake of the Tuesday House vote was Carol Shea-Porter, a first-term Democrat from New Hampshire, who also is not a sponsor of the Kucinich measure. In explaining her vote to send the Kucinich bill to the Judiciary Committee, she said:

"It is the duty of the Vice President to faithfully execute the laws of the United States of America and to defend the Constitution. There is growing evidence that the Executive Branch has ignored some of our laws and has attempted to bend the Constitution to its will. Members of both parties decided that this issue is too important to ignore. I voted with my Republican and Democratic colleagues to investigate the Vice President's actions in office."

She characterized the resolution sending the bill to the Judiciary Committee a "strongly bipartisan vote."

With these kinds of endorsements and calls for action, it is clear that Speaker Pelosi is looking increasingly pathetic and out of touch with her "impeachment is off the table" mantra, and also that Judiciary Chair John Conyers (D-MI), who seems to have been intimidated by the Speaker for the past year, but who earlier had been a leader in exposing the crimes of the Bush/Cheney Administration, is getting strong support for taking a bolder stand.

Stephen Cohen (D-TN), a member of the Judiciary Committee who is a co-sponsor of the Kucinich resolution, says he thinks that there will be an impeachment hearing in the committee.

The 22 House members who have already signed on as co-sponsors of Kucinich's Cheney impeachment resolution are: Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Maxine Waters (D-CA), Hank Johnson (D-GA), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Albert Wynn (D-MD), William Lacy Clay (D-MO), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Jim McDermott (D-WA), Jim Moran (D-VA), Bob Filner (D-CA), Sam Farr (D-CA), Robert Brady (D-PA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Donald Payne (D-NJ), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI), Ed Towns (D-NY), Diane Watson (D-CA), and Danny Davis (D-IL).

The change in attitude toward impeachment among the rank and file, and the evident increasing willingness to buck the Speaker, reflects growing awareness of the groundswell of popular anger with the Bush Administration and the Democratic Congress over continued funding of the Iraq War, and over continued erosion of Constitutional government and civil liberties by an administration that wants unfettered executive power and by a Congress that is afraid to act.

The latest polls show three in four Democrats in favor of impeaching the vice president and president, while a majority of all Americans favor impeaching the vice president and roughly half of all Americans favor impeaching the president.

This is before hearings and presentation of evidence have even begun!

As recently as a month ago, it didn't look like impeachment was in the cards; Now it's starting to look like Cheney's going to be put in the dock.

It may not be long before we start to see bills of impeachment filed against President Bush too.

The corporate media enjoy making fun of Rep. Kucinich, a height-challenged but dedicated progressive who has made a career of standing tall for his views. If his bill ends up leading to impeachment hearings against Cheney, Kucinich will end up having the last laugh. "

Tasered for Being an Asshole

Did you see the video of a Florida student being dragged out of a Kerry speech and tasered? He had a right to ask those questions, but he wouldn't leave the podium and the security and crowd turned against him .
I agree that the untrained campus security police were way too heavy handed.They could've handled thiswithout tasers-but he really was being an asshole, and many You Tubers agree:

In Defense Of Britney

By now you've seen the footage of Britney Spears at the MTV Awards. A lot of people are laughing, saying she can't lip sync, can't dance and is too fat. But most of the comments are overly mean spirited.
As much as I like to make fun of rich overpaid drug addled celebrities like Britney,I think that it has become a major league sport to dwell on the failures of our bloated "stars". All too frequently it's the blonde young females that are the easy targets. Yeah , I'm no fun anymore. I guess you are officially considered an old fart when you prefer to monitor the criminals running our government rather than the bread and circus.
But even tho' Brit looked like a deer in headlights and shook like a bowl of Jello I think it took BIG BALLS for her to try to stay in the public eye after being
seen totally wasted in public for the last few years. And I'd like to see any of you reading this get up in front of the world half naked and try to sing, dance and remember words and moves to stupid songs.
It wasn't your best performance Britney. But I love you anyway.

Liberal station KOPT scraps local content

Liberal-leaning KOPT radio station has pulled the plug on local programming, switching to a nationally syndicated format as of today.

"Despite gaining a loyal listenership, the station, which debuted in November 2004, has been a challenging business venture for Churchill Media," the company said in a statement.

"The challenge is going up against the big guys, the Clear Channels, satellite feed talk radio programs," Churchill Media General Manager Paul Danitz said. Although KOPT did include some satellite feed programs, it also ran a full line news department - an expensive proposition, Danitz said.

Syndicated programming essentially "costs nothing," he said. "You give them a couple of commercial units per hour and they provide you with programming." The only cost to the station is the equipment, and one person to run it, he said.


In contrast, KOPT spent more than $250,000 per year to staff its local news department, Danitz said. Nine news people have now been laid off, he said. One remains.

"Progressive/liberal talk radio is having a very difficult time surviving around the country," Danitz said. "We felt that, with the liberal attitude of the Eugene-Springfield market, we could swim upstream. We couldn't."

The station was never able to get the commercial sponsorship it needed, he said.

Churchill will now concentrate on its core market of Hispanic radio, Danitz said. Churchill owns and operates seven other radio stations in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, six of them Hispanic stations.

Churchill got in on the ground floor of Hispanic programming in the Pacific Northwest, and that division is doing well, Danitz said, to the point that KOPT could have survived if it only broke even. In this region, it's still a small market, he said. "But the cost of operating a Hispanic property is far less than the weight of full-line programming."

KOPT will continue to carry syndicated Air America shows - at least for now. Churchill Media President Suzanne Arlie said Wednesday that she is open to selling KOPT. If the station is not sold within three months, she said, it may be converted to a jazz format.

Danitz said that he's been in radio for 37 years, but that Wednesday was a hard day.

"Today when I went down to deliver the news, to a news department that won 20 awards in 18 months, people knew they were under the gun," he said. "But they gave it everything they had, until the last second."
