She may be a beauty queen, but she is another corrupt republican.Check out these excerpts from Alaskan blog Mudflats:
"Palin is currently in the middle of a controversial gas pipeline project in Alaska. She’s favored the ‘Trans Canada’ proposal that will run the pipeline through Canada, in effect shipping US jobs over the border. Many Alaskans, including former governors, have favored the “All Alaska Route”.
She is also sueing the federal government over listing the polar bears as a threatened species. The science was even compelling enough to convince the Secretery of the Interior that the bears needed to be listed. But acknowlegement of this issue, and the potential disruption to development on Alaska’s oil-rich north slope spurred Palin to attempt to stop the listing.
Does she want to open ANWR? Yes. Every politician in Alaska wants to open ANWR. It’s basically a requirement if you ever hope to get elected for anything. Even Mark Begich, the progressive Democrat running against the indicted Senator and Alaskan institution Ted Stevens, is pro-drilling. That’s the sea we swim in up here. There are a few anti-drilling folks, but you have to look hard to find them, and work hard to have them admit it.
Alaskans really want to like Sarah Palin. In a state where corruption is the rule, and the same faces keep recycling over and over and over again like a bad dream, a new face, with a promise of reform seemed like a breath of fresh air. Palin defeated incumbent governor Frank Murkowski (father of Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski who he appointed to his own Senate seat when he was elected governor) because he was such an obnoxious, bloviating, downright BAD politician. This staunchly republican state voted with relief, not having to cross over and vote Democratic, but still able to get Murkowski the hell out of office. In the general election Palin swept into office running against a former Democratic governor, Tony Knowles, who was capable but came with baggage. And he represented to Alaskans more of the same, tired old-style politics, and special interests that we have come to loathe.
So, if McCain had made his selection six months ago, the squeaky-clean governor meme would have made a little more sense. But, Sarah Palin is currently under an ethics investigation by the Alaska state legislature..... "

My Mom, Rose

t was 25 years ago today that my mom died. It was a miserable summer, started by the news of my mom's massive headaches,marked by many visits to the hospital,conferences with doctors.She had an inoperable brain tumor. Much stress watching my Dad helplessly seeing her endure operations,treatments,and then lapsing into a coma.
By the time I had permanently moved to Connecticut to be with the family, my Mom was in the deepest sleep.No one knew what to do.
The Police song "Every Breath You Take" was played constantly on the radio and MTV. To this day I can't hear it without thinking about her. Just when we had made the decision to move her to Hospice,she died overnight.I remember my Dad waking me at 5 AM with,"Marc wake up, your Mom is gone."
The funeral and wake were a blur-I cried while my brothers held back their tears.There was a procession to the cemetary of about 75 cars,she was well known in West Haven.
Afterwards we all just drank-my birthday came and went with little celebration.
Of course the grief has slowly subsided but there is never a day that I don't think about her. She was only 57,full of life and her passing created a hole in our family that we never recovered from.
She always said that she was going to hell on a hot rail. I hope she ended up in a better place.
I still miss you Mom.

Anthrax Attacks Pushed US to go to War

Have you read about the so called 'Anthrax Suspect' who committed suicide this week?
It looks to me that in reality someone in the Bush administration used anthrax to threaten the public in 2001 to scare us into war with Iraq. Not only did CBS, Dick Cheney, members of Congress and even John McCain advance this theory of a Saddam led anthrax attack, but to this day the major media outlets are declaring the case all wrapped up with the suicide of suspect #2 this week.
The anthrax attacks that had us afraid to open our mail in 2001 were NOT from Iraq, but from within the U.S government labs. Glen Greenwald in Salon has an excellent article HERE about it.
There should be an investigation-this was one of the main reasons we were fooled in 2001 about Iraq.

Saved by a Hamburger

Actually, I usually loath McDonalds,and haven't indulged in a hamburger from McD's in about a year or so.
But last Saturday on the way to cover "Nowsville" I had the urge to get off Franklin and go thru the Drive-Up.
After I paid and left the parking lot,I heard a loud crunch and my truck was listing toward the pavement on the driver side front.My front wheel came off!
Now...if I hadn't stopped for that burger, I may have lost control and smashed into somebody.The AAA tow guy said I was a lucky guy.
Why would I stop on the way to doing a radio show?
What force put the thought of a soggy burger into my head?
The Fast Food Gods were watching out for me.

The L.A. Times had a story sunday about McCain's ties to the beer industry:
"Hensley & Co., one of the nation's major beer wholesalers, has brought the family of Cindy McCain wealth, prestige and influence in Phoenix, but it could also create conflicts for her husband, Sen. John McCain, if he is elected president in November.

Hensley, founded by Cindy McCain's late father, holds federal and state licenses to distribute beer and lobbies regulatory agencies on alcohol issues that involve public health and safety.
The company has opposed such groups as Mothers Against Drunk Driving in fighting proposed federal rules requiring alcohol content information on every package of beer, wine and liquor.

Its executives, including John McCain's son Andrew, have written at least 10 letters in recent years to the Treasury Department, have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to a beer industry political action committee, and hold a seat on the board of the politically powerful National Beer Wholesalers Assn.

Hensley has run afoul of health advocacy groups that have tried to rein in appeals to young drinkers. For example, the company distributes caffeinated alcoholic drinks that public health groups say put young and underage consumers at risk by disguising the effects of intoxication.

The involvement of McCain's family in federal regulatory issues could create a conflict of interest for a future McCain administration, according to advocacy groups and political analysts. McCain has recused himself for many years on alcohol issues in the Senate. As president, however, McCain would face far more difficulty distancing himself from an issue with such broad scope.

Cindy McCain holds the title of company chairwoman and controls about 68% of the privately held company stock with her children and the senator's son, according to records at the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control. Cindy and John McCain keep their finances separate, and he has no stake or role in Hensley.

In an interview in May, she said she knew "everything that is going on" and communicated with her executive team every day. She added that she did not need to be at headquarters to be in charge. So far, she has given no hint of what changes, if any, she envisions. "That's very premature," she said.

If her husband is elected president and she retains her role at Hensley, she will set a precedent for outside corporate activity by a first lady.

The McCain campaign issued a statement Friday about the issue, saying that "any decisions going forward will be made when John McCain wins the election and takes office, and not before." Hensley executives declined to comment.

Political analysts said they were astounded that the presumptive Republican nominee had not already addressed the issue.

"You can't run a beer company out of the White House," said Samuel L. Popkin, a political science professor at UC San Diego. "You can't run any company from the White House. McCain is leaving a live hand grenade on the table, a major embarrassment."

Margo Guryan on Sunday's Show

I will be interviewing Margo Guryan on Tomorrow's program.From Wikipedia:

Margo Guryan (born in Far Rockaway, New York City) is a singer/songwriter who blends elements of pop, folk, and jazz. She is best known for her 1968 album Take A Picture. Her songs have been recorded by Mama Cass, Glen Campbell, and Astrud Gilberto, among others.
Margo Guryan grew up in the suburbs of New York, and took an interest in music from an early age. At Boston University, she studied classical and jazz piano, idolizing musicians such as Max Roach and Bill Evans. She was primarily a jazz musician until a friend made her listen to the song God Only Knows from the album Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. According to Guryan,
"I thought it was just gorgeous. I bought the record and played it a million times, then sat down and wrote 'Think of Rain.' That's really how I started writing that way. I just decided it was better than what was happening in jazz."
In 1968, she released the album Take A Picture. Take A Picture was a breezy album full of light, jazz-tinged pop melodies. However, due to Guryan's refusal to tour, the album was underpromoted and failed to make an impact. Resigned with this, Guryan withdrew from the professional scene and became a music teacher.
Recent years, however, have seen a remarkable resurgence of interest in her '60s work - enough so that Take A Picture was reissued in 2000 by Franklin Castle Records. Additionally, a demos collection entitled 25 Demos has been made available. In 2006, the song "Take A Picture" was used in a TV advert for mobile camera phones.

Colbert Report- McCain 'green screen challenge'

Technologically unsavvy Republican presidential candidate John McCain may be regretting his choice of a green background in a nationally televised speech earlier this month.

Playing off an earlier challenge to his viewers, Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert called for submissions to his "green screen challenge" to make McCain's much-panned speech seem more interesting. On Thursday night's show, Colbert aired the first set of submissions. Dozens more have been posted to YouTube.

Cindy McCain May Reap Benefits of Anheuser-Busch Bid (Update1)

June 13 (Bloomberg) -- Cindy McCain, the millionaire wife of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, may see her fortune increase with a proposed takeover of beermaker Anheuser- Busch Cos., financial disclosures show.

Cindy McCain, who has assets of at least $8.5 million, owned more than $1 million of Anheuser-Busch shares at the end of last year, according to a Senate disclosure form filed by her husband and released today. News of the $46.3 billion unsolicited bid from InBev NV has sent the company's shares soaring, up about 17 percent from Dec. 31.

The exact size of the potential windfall is unknown because the financial forms require lawmakers and their spouses to list only ranges for the values of their assets, and one option is to simply say ``over $1 million.'' Messages left with McCain's Senate office and campaign weren't returned.

InBev made the $65-per-share offer for the maker of Budweiser beer on June 11, and Anheuser-Busch said it would consider the bid. A transaction would unite Budweiser, the lager first brewed 132 years ago in St. Louis, with InBev's Stella Artois, Bass and more than 200 other brands.

Cindy McCain also owns a beer distributorship, Hensley & Co., worth more than $1 million. She reported liabilities of between $2.8 million and $5.5 million, owing money on King Aviation, the private jet company whose planes were used by her husband during the campaign, as well as construction, credit and promissory notes.
